JAMI DAVIES AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN CARDIFF
A man named Jami Davies, aged 34 and residing in Bridgend, has been convicted of serious sexual offences involving a girl under the age of 16 in Cardiff. His actions took place at a time when the victim was vulnerable, and he exploited that vulnerability in a disturbing manner.
The incident came to light after Davies approached the young girl while she was sleeping.
According to court proceedings, he initially engaged in touching her over her clothes, targeting her leg and bottom in a clearly sexual manner.
The victim, frightened and distressed, told him to stop, but Davies persisted in his inappropriate behavior.
He attempted to slide his hands into her clothing to touch her genital area despite her protests.
During the assault, the young girl desperately told her attacker, "Don't be a paedophile," clearly aware of the gravity of his actions and asserting her resistance.
Despite her plea, Davies continued, forcibly placing his hand inside her top, where he touched her breasts.
The girl, in a moment of courage, exclaimed, "F*** you, I'm a child," showing her disbelief and emotional turmoil in trying to make sense of the assault.
It was only when Davies noticed she was recording him on her phone that he appeared to halt his actions, alarmed by the possibility of being caught.
Initially, the victim was reluctant to disclose the abuse, but after some time, she confided in her mother about what had happened.
This led to Davies's arrest on April 28.
During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Davies faced charges of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
Although he denied the allegations, claiming his victim was not truthful, the jury was not convinced and found him guilty on all counts.
It was noted during the trial that Davies had no prior criminal convictions relevant to these allegations.
In a poignant victim personal statement read aloud in court, the girl described the experience as an overwhelming mental assault, calling it "a headf***." She expressed her feelings of devastation, revealing that she believed she would not be able to withstand the emotional strain of the trial but had managed to endure it.
The girl made a pointed statement to Davies, saying, "Jami, if you're listening to this, f*** you, I am a child.
You f****** me up and screwed me up bad." She also shared the emotional toll the abuse took on her, recounting days when she was unable to attend school due to her distress.
While the conviction and sentence might offer some sense of justice, the girl conveyed that her feelings of relief were complicated.
She expressed a mixture of satisfaction that her abuser was found guilty and a bleak acknowledgment that the trauma would linger, stating, "Knowing my abuser has been found guilty and is being sentenced makes me feel happy for other girls he could have hurt or traumatised.
I don't feel the relief I should.
It feels good but I don't feel better." Defense attorney Neil Evans offered mitigation, revealing that Davies had experienced considerable personal hardship, including multiple family bereavements.
He admitted that Davies had turned to alcohol and drugs as a way of coping with his emotional pain.
Furthermore, Davies, a father of four and HGV driver, had a history of a serious incident where he was ejected from a moving van, resulting in him being placed in an induced coma due to injuries including a fractured skull.
On the night of the offences, Davies was reportedly intoxicated, having consumed ten pints of lager.
The prosecution described his actions as opportunistic.
In sentencing, Judge Lucy Crowther sentenced Davies to a total of 15 months in prison.
Additionally, Davies was imposed with sex offender notification requirements, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a restraining order extending for 10 years to protect the victim and prevent any further contact.
This case underscores the significant breach of trust and the lasting impact of such heinous crimes on young victims in Cardiff.
