In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online predators, James Wilson, a 53-year-old bus driver from Newcastle, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after falling victim to an elaborate sting operation conducted by the online paedophile hunting group Dark Justice.Wilson, a married grandfather, initially sought out interactions with what he believed were underage girls by entering a teen chat room on the internet.
Using a fabricated profile under the alias 'Billy,' claiming to be 22 years old, he engaged in conversations with a profile that appeared to belong to a 13-year-old girl.
The court was told that the exchanges between Wilson and the fake profile quickly turned sexual in nature.
According to the court proceedings, Wilson's online interactions rapidly escalated from casual chatting to explicit sexual content.
He sent webcam footage of himself performing a sex act and requested indecent images from the supposed teenager.
These actions demonstrated a clear intent to engage in sexual activity with a minor, which Wilson believed was real at the time.
Unbeknownst to Wilson, the profile he was communicating with was created by Dark Justice, an online group dedicated to catching predators.
The group had set up the fake profile to lure individuals like Wilson into revealing their intentions.
When Wilson realized he had been duped, he took immediate action by disposing of his laptop and surrendering himself to police authorities.
Wilson's arrest and subsequent court hearing revealed that he had been communicating with the fake teenager via Facebook and WhatsApp.
During police interviews, he admitted that he was bored and that the online chat quickly turned sexual after they began talking.
He also expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the seriousness of his conduct.
Kevin Wardlaw, prosecuting, stated that Wilson had confessed to engaging in sexual conversations with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl and that he had sent explicit images of himself.
Wilson further admitted that he had asked the fake profile for a picture of the girl and had shown a webcam image of himself.
Following his arrest, Wilson was charged with attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced by Newcastle Crown Court to 16 months in prison.
The court also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register and imposed a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct.
In addition to his criminal sentence, Wilson has resigned from his job as a bus driver and is currently facing financial difficulties, struggling to keep up with his mortgage payments.
