PLYMOUTH MAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES AND ONLINE GROOMING
A judge addressed a man who was caught possessing thousands of indecent images of minors after an undercover police officer posed online as a young girl to catch him.James Travis, aged 42 and residing on Beaumont Road in Plymouth, appeared earlier this week at Plymouth Crown Court to face charges including producing, distributing, and possessing illegal images of children, as well as attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
He was found guilty of these crimes at Plymouth Magistrates' Court on May 15 and was sent to the Crown Court for sentencing.
The prosecution stated that in October 2021, Travis began communicating with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl using the KIK messaging app, unaware that it was an undercover officer.
He initially discussed girls in swimsuits, sent images, and continued to communicate even after learning of her age.
He also made insinuations about sexual acts and shared explicit images, including pictures of underage girls in compromising poses and extreme pornography depicting a human and a horse.
Law enforcement traced Travis through his KIK login details, and forensic analysis of his computers uncovered thousands of illicit images, including those classified as Category A (most serious), B, and C, along with extreme pornographic material.
In interviews with police, Travis admitted that he believed the decoy was 13 and that he had sent indecent images.
He also revealed that he started a relationship with his partner at 16 but stated he told others she was 24.
The court imposed a sentence of 23 months in prison, suspended for two years, along with two years of supervised probation, participation in a sex offenders' programme, 14 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and 140 hours of unpaid community work.
Additionally, Travis is subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must register as a sex offender for the same period.
The judge warned that if he reoffends or breaches any conditions within the two-year suspension, the prison sentence would be activated.
The judge highlighted the seriousness of the crimes involving the abuse and exploitation of children.
