JAMES SWEETING OF HUDDERSFIELD SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES AT LOCAL SCHOOL
In January 2015, James Sweeting, a volunteer at a school in Huddersfield, was sentenced to serve four and a half years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses involving young girls.Sweeting, who had aspirations of becoming a teacher, was arrested and brought before Leeds Crown Court, where details of his disturbing conduct were revealed.
Sweeting, aged 23 and residing on Bedale Drive in Skelmanthorpe, was found guilty of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl when he managed to isolate her on one occasion.
The court heard that he had also made inappropriate requests to another girl, who was older, asking her to send him photographs of herself in her underwear.
He further expressed a desire to kiss her and even suggested she wear sexy underwear to school, demonstrating a pattern of grooming behavior.
Additionally, Sweeting engaged in a disturbing online relationship with a girl in America, despite knowing she was only 13 years old.
He exchanged explicit images with her and performed a sexual act on camera so she could watch him, further illustrating his predatory conduct.
These actions were considered serious violations of trust and legality.
Sweeting admitted to multiple charges, including sexual assault, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a minor.
As part of his sentencing, he was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was prohibited from working with children in any capacity.
Judge Geoffrey Marson QC addressed the court, expressing his disappointment that someone of Sweeting’s intelligence and potential could commit such offenses.
The judge remarked, “It is a tragedy to see a man of your calibre in the dock on such charges.
You have forever destroyed any hope of pursuing a career in teaching.” While the court acknowledged that Sweeting did not initially volunteer at the school with malicious intent, his subsequent abuse of the trust placed in him was a grave breach.
The case also involved elements of grooming, particularly in the interactions with a 17-year-old girl and the 13-year-old girl, which took place over the internet and involved manipulative behavior.
The court heard that the 15-year-old girl suffered psychological harm as a result of Sweeting’s actions, and the judge emphasized that she was in no way to blame, stating, “The blame lies wholly at your door.” Prosecutor Ian Brook detailed the initial incident, describing how Sweeting sat next to the girl at school and began to touch her knee over her trousers.
He then moved her hand towards his trousers, which she pulled away.
Later, when they were alone, Sweeting kissed her and placed his hand inside her trousers, but withdrew it when someone passed by.
When questioned after his arrest, Sweeting denied the allegations, claiming his actions were motivated by his Christian beliefs and that he only exchanged photographs with consenting adults over the internet.
He also claimed he did not believe in sex before marriage.
Michael Brady, representing Sweeting, argued that his client was a sexually inexperienced young man who found himself in a confusing situation, given his age and voluntary role at the school.
He suggested that boundaries had become blurred and that Sweeting’s actions were not driven by malicious intent.
Ultimately, the court’s verdict reflected the severity of Sweeting’s misconduct and the profound impact on his victims, leading to his imprisonment and lifelong registration as a sex offender, with restrictions on future employment involving children.
