JAMES STEWART: PERTH DOMESTIC ABUSER SENTENCED FOR VILE OFFENCES AGAINST FOUR EX-GIRLFRIENDS

James Stewart, a 24-year-old man from Perth, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after admitting to a series of heinous and cowardly domestic abuse offences committed against four former partners.

The Perth Sheriff Court heard harrowing details of Stewart’s violent and manipulative behavior, which spanned over three and a half years, from September 2017 to March 2021, across various locations including Perth, Cupar, and Blairgowrie.

Stewart’s actions were described as excessively violent and indicative of a significant risk to women.

The court was told that he held a lighter and threatened to set fire to his partner while she was lying in bed with a baby, an act that underscores the dangerous and threatening nature of his conduct.

In another disturbing incident, he performed a spinning kick on a different girlfriend, inflicting excruciating pain because he was upset that she intended to go out with her friends.

Such acts of violence demonstrated a pattern of controlling and aggressive behavior.

Further allegations revealed that Stewart threatened to pour boiling water over a woman and her child, and he routinely spat mucus into the face of a partner.

Additionally, he damaged a phone belonging to another girlfriend simply because she had male friends on Facebook, illustrating his obsessive and hostile attitude towards his partners’ social interactions.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Stewart’s abusive conduct had severe consequences for his victims, with two of them being forced to withdraw from college due to the trauma inflicted by his actions.

The court emphasized the repeated nature of his offences, which showed a disturbing pattern of domestic violence and intimidation.

Sheriff Gillian Wade addressed Stewart directly, condemning his conduct as vile and cowardly.

She stated, “This catalogue of offending is predominantly directed against vulnerable young women.

Your behaviour is perpetual and repeated and you showed no remorse for a very long period of time.

Despite repeated convictions for this type of crime, you continued to offend against every intimate partner which you had.

Your behaviour is vile.

Spitting mucus in the face of your partner is a considerable concern.” She further explained that Stewart’s actions amounted to bullying and were both cowardly and unpleasant.

The sheriff highlighted that his excessive violence and repeated offences demonstrated that he posed a significant risk to women, leaving the court with no choice but to impose a custodial sentence.

Stewart was sentenced to 30 months in prison, with an additional year of supervised release upon his release.

In her remarks, Sheriff Wade also referenced recent sentencing guidelines that favor rehabilitation over imprisonment for offenders under 25.

She noted, “These sentences are significantly less than I would have imposed if you were a man who had reached the age of over 26.” Stewart was ordered to stay away from each of his victims for five years.

The court also considered Stewart’s background, including the fact that his father was convicted of a domestically-aggravated offence last year, which may have contributed to his normalization of such behaviour.

His solicitor, Paul Ralph, expressed hope that Stewart would eventually mature and realize that there are healthier ways to live, emphasizing that there was no evidence of sexual manipulation, only “horrible and nasty behaviour.” Stewart pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of engaging in an abusive course of behaviour, two counts of assault, and two charges of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear or alarm.

The case underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the importance of holding offenders accountable to protect vulnerable women in Perth and beyond.
