SHOCKING CRIME IN ROTHERHAM: JAMES SMITH AND CLAIRE CROSBY INVOLVED IN CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND FILMING
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Rotherham, a convicted sex offender, James Smith, and a woman named Claire Crosby, have been implicated in heinous acts involving children and explicit material. The incident came to light in December 2018, revealing a deeply troubling situation where children were coerced into filming sexual acts involving the accused individuals.
James Smith, aged 44 and residing on Oaks Lane in Rotherham, was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court.
The sentence followed his admission to multiple charges, including three counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and two counts of possessing indecent photographs of a child.
Smith’s criminal record includes previous breaches of similar orders, and he was found to have violated a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that prohibited him from contacting girls under 17 or any minors without explicit permission.
This order was breached twice before, indicating a pattern of disregard for legal restrictions.
Claire Crosby, aged 38 from Moorgate Road in Rotherham, was also involved in the case.
Her legal representative claimed she had been “groomed and manipulated” by Smith, which she argued contributed to her participation.
Crosby pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity in the presence of a child and received a suspended sentence of 18 months, which will be served over two years.
She maintained that she was unaware of Smith’s prior convictions for child sex offences, which included an eight-month jail term in 2004 and a 20-week sentence in 2015.
Their offending was uncovered after police investigations revealed three explicit videos featuring Smith and Crosby.
These videos were discovered on a mobile phone that had been sold to a Cash Generator store in Rotherham.
Prosecutor Mr.
Richard Sheldon highlighted the disturbing nature of the videos, noting that children could be seen commenting on the acts taking place, and that the children themselves were filming the events.
He emphasized that the police did not believe the children had accidentally stumbled upon the acts but were actively involved in recording them.
Further evidence included the seizure of devices from Smith, which contained three indecent images of children.
The investigation also uncovered more than 1,000 text messages exchanged between Smith and Crosby, discussing various sexual activities, including those involving children and the filming of such acts.
The extent of their involvement and the disturbing content revealed a grave breach of trust and a serious threat to the safety of minors.
In mitigation, Ms.
Vanessa Saxton, representing Smith, stated that he was willing to participate in a rehabilitation program for sex offenders, indicating some recognition of the need for treatment.
Both Smith and Crosby were ordered to complete rehabilitation programs—Smith was to undertake a comprehensive program, while Crosby was mandated to complete 60 days of therapy.
The case has left the community of Rotherham in shock, raising urgent questions about safeguarding and the protection of vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
