JAMES ROUTLEDGE FROM CARLISLE SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR RAPE OF THREE WOMEN IN CARLISLE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Carlisle, James Routledge, a 23-year-old man from Wellgate in Scotby, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of raping three women. The crimes took place in and around Carlisle, and the case has drawn significant attention due to the brutal nature of the offenses and the psychological trauma inflicted on the victims.
According to court proceedings, Routledge admitted to three counts of rape, each involving different women, with one incident occurring while the victim was asleep.
The court heard that after raping one of the women, Routledge exhibited a disturbing display of remorse by hugging and kissing her, then apologizing for his actions.
This behavior was highlighted during the trial as an unsettling attempt to perhaps diminish the severity of his crimes.
Prosecutor Tom Evans detailed the harrowing accounts of the victims.
One woman described how she focused on a mark on the ceiling during her assault, a detail that underscored her attempt to cope with the trauma.
She later recounted how Routledge’s actions were followed by an unsettling gesture of affection—he hugged and kissed her, claiming he was sorry.
She described experiencing “mini-flashbacks,” where the memory of the assault becomes so vivid that it feels as though it is happening all over again, illustrating the lasting psychological scars left by the attack.
Another victim’s ordeal was marked by her repeated efforts to resist Routledge’s unwanted advances.
Despite her protests and attempts to push him away, Routledge persisted and ultimately raped her.
She was so distressed that she shouted and screamed, explicitly telling him that what he was doing constituted rape.
Her resistance underscores the violent and non-consensual nature of the assault.
The third woman’s experience was equally traumatic.
She awoke to find herself having been raped by Routledge, who was already under investigation for the other two assaults at the time.
During the investigation, Routledge was recorded admitting to the acts, further confirming his guilt.
These recordings played a crucial role in securing his conviction, as they provided undeniable evidence of his culpability.
During the sentencing hearing, defense barrister Judith McCullough argued that Routledge’s actions might have been influenced by “immaturity,” suggesting that this factor contributed to his offending.
However, the judge, Richard Archer, was unequivocal in his assessment.
He emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, “To rape one woman is serious indeed.
But to rape three women is serious in the extreme.” Judge Archer sentenced Routledge to 15 years in prison, with an extended three-year license period.
He declared Routledge a dangerous offender, indicating that he posed a significant risk of committing further sexual offenses.
Under the terms of the sentence, Routledge is required to serve at least two-thirds of his prison term before being eligible for parole.
Additionally, he will be registered on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community of Carlisle from further harm.
