JAMES MCLLELAND FROM EYEMOUTH FINED FOR NEGLECTING DOG WITH SEVERE SKIN CONDITION

In a case that has drawn attention to animal welfare concerns in the region, James McLelland, a resident of Deanhead Drive in Eyemouth, was found guilty of neglecting his four-year-old terrier, Trixie. Born around 1949, McLelland was convicted in connection with his failure to seek or provide necessary veterinary care for his dog, which was suffering from a painful skin condition compounded by a severe flea infestation.

According to reports, McLelland's neglect was in direct violation of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. The dog, Trixie, was found to have very little hair along her back legs, with her skin appearing thickened and dark grey in color. Examination revealed raised, small, hard boils on her skin, along with open wounds caused by incessant scratching. The severity of her condition was attributed to a longstanding flea infestation that had gone untreated for an extended period.

The situation came to light when Trixie was taken to a veterinary clinic for urgent assessment. Veterinarians immediately provided her with pain relief, administered steroids, antibiotics, and applied flea treatment in an effort to alleviate her suffering. The veterinary team confirmed that Trixie was in considerable pain due to her untreated skin and flea issues, which had been neglected by her owner.

Following the treatment, Trixie showed signs of recovery and was subsequently rehomed to a caring new owner. The case highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for timely veterinary intervention in cases of animal suffering.

In court, McLelland was fined £300 for his neglectful actions. Additionally, he received a ban from owning animals for a period of five years, a restriction that was set to expire in December 2021. The case serves as a reminder of the legal obligations owners have to ensure the health and welfare of their pets, and the consequences of failing to do so.
