JAMES MCGEOWN SENTENCED IN CHESTER FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST VULNERABLE GIRL

In August 2022, a serious case involving a Chester-based businessman culminated in a significant legal judgment. James McGeown, aged 65 and residing on Commonhall Street in Chester, was found guilty of multiple sexual offences committed against a young girl who was described as severely incapacitated due to alcohol consumption at the time of the incidents.

The case was heard at Caernarfon Crown Court, where McGeown received a substantial prison sentence. He was sentenced to six years in prison for attempted rape, and an additional five years each for two counts of indecent assault. These sentences are to run concurrently, meaning the total time served will be six years.

Prosecutor Elen Owen provided details of the case, emphasizing that McGeown had been convicted of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault following a trial that concluded with a majority verdict. The court was informed that the victim, who struggled with forming relationships and suffers from depression, was particularly vulnerable during the incidents.

The presiding judge, Recorder Wyn Lloyd-Jones, addressed McGeown directly, highlighting that the victim had been drinking and was, in his view, especially vulnerable. The judge also pointed out the significant age difference between McGeown and the girl, which added to the gravity of the offences.

During the proceedings, it was noted that McGeown did not administer the alcohol to the victim but showed no remorse for his actions when questioned by a probation officer. The judge remarked that McGeown's own actions were to blame for the situation and that he bore full responsibility for the consequences of his conduct.

In his sentencing remarks, the judge acknowledged that McGeown had lost everything due to his convictions but made it clear that he was accountable for his crimes. As part of the sentence, McGeown was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions related to his criminal conduct.
