JAMES MCENTEE FROM SWINDON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ILLEGAL IMAGE SCANDAL NEAR PRE-SCHOOL
In a case that has shocked the local community in Swindon, James McEntee, a 20-year-old resident living just a short distance from a pre-school on Clifton Street, was brought before Swindon Crown Court to face serious allegations related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of minors. The proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior involving the download and sharing of illicit material depicting young boys, some in nappies, which he had stored on his personal devices.
According to the prosecution, the case was initially uncovered during an investigation by authorities in the West Midlands, who were examining a separate individual involved in sharing indecent images online via the Gigatribe network.
During their inquiries in December 2011, law enforcement officials traced the activity back to McEntee’s residence on Clifton Street in Swindon.
The investigation culminated in August of the following year when officers from the child internet exploitation team visited his home to conduct a formal interview.
During the search, multiple computers and storage devices were confiscated, and McEntee readily admitted to his involvement.
Prosecutor Colin Meeke detailed that McEntee confessed to actively searching for images of boys aged 12 and older, although he admitted to having viewed material involving younger children as well.
He described the images as including boys in swimwear and in nappies, which he had carefully organized into folders alongside other related content.
McEntee also disclosed that he had previously deactivated his Gigatribe account out of guilt but had later reactivated it, continuing his illicit activities.
The investigation uncovered hundreds of images stored on his devices, some of which, while not explicitly illegal, depicted children and teenagers in nappies.
Search histories revealed that he had looked for young children online, and among the material was a photograph of a child tied to a tree at a Scout camp, which he claimed to have taken as a joke.
He stated that the child was not under duress and that the Scout leaders and other children were present at the time.
Despite his claims, the court found the collection of images and his actions concerning.
McEntee was charged with seven counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possessing such images, and one count of possessing prohibited images.
It was noted that he resided mere yards from the pre-school, though there was no evidence linking him or the images directly to the institution.
During the hearing, defense lawyer Rob Ross emphasized that McEntee was a young man who expressed a desire to change his ways after spending time with his legal counsel.
However, Judge Douglas Field sentenced him to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, McEntee was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and to comply with a sexual offences prevention order for five years.
The judge acknowledged that the offending had spanned several years, beginning when McEntee was approximately 16 years old, and highlighted his lack of previous convictions as a mitigating factor.
Nonetheless, the court emphasized the seriousness of the crimes committed and the need for ongoing supervision and registration.
