EDINBURGH MAN JAILED FOR DECADE AFTER DECADES OF SEXUAL AND VIOLENT CRIMES
A man responsible for a series of sexual assaults and threats aimed at a woman, including a promise to share private images, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars.James Loftus, 66, and previously residing in Balerno, Edinburgh, committed numerous violent and sexual crimes against three individuals, starting with two minors during the early stages of his offending.
Despite maintaining his innocence, Loftus was convicted on 17 charges covering rape, sexual assault, indecent behaviour, crimes that endangered life, breach of the peace, and threatening or abusive conduct.
Evidence presented in court revealed Loftus's offending began in 1988 and spanned several decades at various Edinburgh locations.
One woman testified that Loftus had taken explicit photos and videos of her, some regarded as 'pornographic,' and had threatened to distribute them.
She described her fear that he would use the images maliciously, saying, “He just told me he wanted to take some sexy photos of me.” Loftus threatened to circulate these images around her workplace and to others, asserting, “He said that he would use them against me.
He would ruin my life by showing them to other people or get someone else to do it for him, so that it couldn’t be traced back to him.” The woman also detailed violent acts, where Loftus mimicked stabbing her with a knife, pressed it to her neck, and warned, “I am going to finish you,” while smiling maliciously.
He additionally assaulted her by kicking, pulling her by her hair, and throttling her, forcing her to crawl and kiss his feet.
He was found guilty of raping her, causing her bodily harm with a danger to her life, and threatening to post explicit content about her online.
A separate victim, now aged 36, suffered physical and sexual abuse from Loftus as a child, including exposure, neck squeezing, and suffocation.
The court noted that Loftus continues to deny the charges, but the jury dismissed his claims that he was a victim.
Judge Lord Sandison highlighted the emotional impact statements from victims as powerful testimony and stressed the significant harm inflicted.
After sentencing, Loftus was registered as a sex offender indefinitely, underscoring the serious repercussions of his crimes.
