JAMES LEIGH CAUGHT IN NEWCASTLE GATESHEAD PAEDOPHILE PLOT

In February 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving James Leigh, a trainee priest from Newcastle, who found himself behind bars after a series of alarming online interactions aimed at a supposed 14-year-old boy in Gateshead.

Leigh was residing with a Catholic priest in Newcastle at the time, actively training to become a member of the clergy.

However, his online activities took a dark turn when he engaged with a profile on Grindr, a social networking app primarily used by adults for dating and social connections.

Unbeknownst to him, this profile was part of an elaborate sting set up by paedophile hunters known as Guardians of the North, designed to catch individuals seeking illegal encounters with minors.

Despite being explicitly informed that the profile belonged to a 14-year-old boy, Leigh continued to communicate, sending a message that read, “Looking for young teen meet now.” He engaged in explicit conversations, discussing sexual activities, and even suggested meeting the boy at Gateshead Leisure Centre.

During these exchanges, Leigh sent a graphic image of his genitals, expressed a preference for “sweaty teen lads,” and showed a clear intent to meet the minor for sexual purposes.

Leigh’s actions culminated in him arriving at the designated meeting spot, where he was confronted by the group behind the decoy profile.

The situation escalated when police officers arrived on the scene, leading to his immediate arrest.

The court proceedings revealed that Leigh was 30 years old at the time of his arrest.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Leigh pleaded guilty to attempted grooming.

Despite receiving a commendation in the form of a glowing reference from a bishop, the judge, Recorder Tahir Khan, sentenced him to 12 months in prison.

The judge also ordered Leigh to register as a sex offender and imposed a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

In his sentencing remarks, Recorder Khan acknowledged Leigh’s previously good character and achievements, citing a testimonial from a bishop that praised his qualities.

However, he emphasized the seriousness of the offence, stating, “You made contact with somebody who did not exist in reality, and this came about because the group calling themselves Guardians of the North had created a fake profile of a 14-year-old boy, with the express intention of catching people who may be tempted to seek out sexual activity with underage boys.” He further explained that Leigh was clearly eager to meet what he believed was a minor for sexual activity, despite knowing such conduct was unlawful.

The judge noted that Leigh was training to be a priest at the time of the offence, which added to the gravity of his actions.

The court heard that the incident occurred in May of the previous year while Leigh was living with a churchman in Newcastle.

Prosecutor Emma Dowling detailed how Leigh had used Grindr, a site intended for adults over 18, to contact the decoy profile.

From the outset, Leigh was aware that the ‘boy’ was only 14, yet he continued to communicate, sending explicit messages and images.

During the exchanges, Leigh discussed potential meeting arrangements, including visiting the boy’s home while his mother was working night shifts.

However, he was informed that the boy’s brother was present in the house.

The conversation then shifted to where they could meet, with Gateshead Leisure Centre being suggested.

Leigh, whose address was listed as Great Broughton, Cockermouth, Cumbria, indicated he would arrive in his black Hyundai.

He inquired about the safety of the location, asking if the car park was quiet and if there were cameras.

After considering the risks, he decided against the initial plan, stating, “It’s too well lit and too risky to meet there.” Leigh’s intentions became clear when he sent a graphic image of his genitals and asked if the ‘boy’ had any images to share.

The decoy profile responded negatively.

Despite this, Leigh expressed his preference for “sweaty teen lads.” When Leigh arrived at Gateshead Leisure Centre, he was confronted by the group behind the decoy profile and subsequently arrested by police officers.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online grooming and protect minors from exploitation.
