JAMES LEE FROM BALLISODARE, SLIGO, SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE IN COUNTY SLIGO

In January 2004, a tragic case of child abuse culminated in the sentencing of James Lee, a 70-year-old man from Ballisodare, County Sligo. The court heard harrowing details of Lee’s heinous actions, which had inflicted lasting trauma on multiple young victims. Judge Anthony Kennedy, presiding over the case, described Lee as embodying the devious and manipulative nature often associated with child molesters, emphasizing the calculated manner in which he carried out his offenses.

One of the most disturbing aspects highlighted during the sentencing was Lee’s attempt to silence two of his victims by offering them €2,000 each to keep quiet. The judge questioned whether Lee truly comprehended the gravity of his actions or showed any remorse, pointing out that his attitude since the disclosures had been indicative of a lack of insight. The court was told that Lee had denied the abuse during police investigations, offering only minimal admissions, which further underscored his manipulative tendencies.

The impact on the victims was profound and multifaceted. The complainants, aged between 10 and 13 at the time of the abuse, described feelings of self-blame, confusion, embarrassment, and shock. Lee received a sentence of eight years for the count of buggery, with six years to run concurrently on another related charge. For three counts of indecent assault against the same victim, he was sentenced to one, two, and three years, respectively, with these terms to run concurrently. Additionally, Lee was sentenced to four years for indecent assaults on another boy, with separate one-year sentences for offenses against two other victims, to be served consecutively where applicable.

Leave to appeal was refused, and Lee was ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.
