HORRIFIC CRUELTY BY JAMES KIRMAN AND RACHEL DRINKELL IN GRIMSBY LEAVES CHILDREN TRAUMATIZED

In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community of Grimsby, a couple identified as James Kirman, aged 31, and Rachel Drinkell, aged 24, have been sentenced to prison for their heinous treatment of two young children. The incident, which unfolded in Humberside, involved a series of cruel acts that left lasting psychological and physical scars on the victims.

According to court proceedings, the pair was caught on video engaging in disturbing acts of abuse. The footage revealed them pinning a young girl to the ground as she screamed and cried in distress. The videos also depicted them tormenting the children by having sex in front of them and sounding an airhorn directly into a baby’s ear, actions that are both shocking and deeply inappropriate. The cruelty escalated when they forced the girl to hold the baby against a radiator, resulting in severe burns that required urgent medical attention.

The injured child was discovered by a paramedic in a shower, and he was promptly transported to the burns unit at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. The extent of the injuries and the abusive environment became evident as relatives of the children watched the videos during a court session at Grimsby Crown Court on a Friday. The emotional impact on the family was palpable, with many crying as they viewed the evidence.

Both Kirman and Drinkell admitted to charges of cruelty, which included neglecting their duty to supervise the children properly and delaying medical intervention after the burns incident. During the trial, their defense attempted to downplay some of the acts, with Ernie Lidster, representing Kirman, claiming that the spider episode was “a joke that went too far.” He argued that Kirman accepted he should have called an ambulance sooner after the boy was burned. However, the prosecution, led by Jeremy Evans, highlighted the disturbing behavior of the couple, noting that both were seen smiling while inflicting suffering on the children.

Medical experts from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London testified that the children had suffered psychological trauma as a result of the abuse. One child was described as “reserved” as they slowly recovered from physical injuries, while the other was experiencing sleep difficulties. The court heard that the abuse was not only physical but also sexual, with the judge emphasizing that the acts occurred over an extended period, including sexual intercourse in the presence of the children.

Judge David Tremberg delivered a stern sentence, condemning the defendants for their breach of trust and the serious nature of their misconduct. He stated, “With the privilege of child care comes a heavy responsibility. Each of you were in a position of trust and one of a duty of care. Your breach of their trust and the trust placed in you was consistent, serious and substantial. Your behaviour was a course of ill-treatment and cruelty. You acted as a team.” The judge further condemned their actions, describing the abuse as systematic and ongoing, with the children being terrorized and emotionally harmed.

Detective Constable Darren Fox, who led the investigation, expressed his horror at the case, calling it “one of the most horrific cases of its kind” he has encountered. He added, “I can only hope that those involved have time to think about the actions and behaviour which has led to them receiving custodial sentences. My thoughts at this time are with the two children.”

Both Kirman and Drinkell were sentenced to 32 months in prison, a punishment reflecting the gravity of their crimes and the profound impact on the young victims they were entrusted to care for in Grimsby.
