SHOREHAM MAN GIVEN HOSPITAL ORDER AFTER WIFE STABBING
James Gumbrell, aged 65 and a retired bricklayer, has been committed to a hospital following his conviction for the killing of his wife Deborah at their home in Northbourne Close on 24 October 2022.The incident involved Gumbrell stabbing Deborah, who was 59 years old, after which he contacted emergency services to confess to the act on the same day.
Despite responders arriving quickly, efforts to save Deborah failed, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gumbrell initially admitted to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, a plea accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service, although he denied being guilty of murder.
He was later charged with murder two days later.
In court proceedings at Chichester Crown Court in March 2023, Gumbrell maintained his plea of guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.
The judge at Lewes Crown Court ordered that Gumbrell be detained in hospital to undergo treatment under the Mental Health Act.
Sussex Police’s major crime team issued condolences to Deborah’s family, describing the case as tragic and recognizing the impact on her children and grandchildren, highlighting the profound loss experienced by her loved ones.
