JAMES GREENHILL SENT TO PRISON FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES IN ALVASTON
In a case that has once again brought to light the serious issue of sexual misconduct involving minors, James Greenhill, a 62-year-old resident of Wensleydale Walk in Alvaston, has been sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to engaging in sexual activities with a teenage boy. The court proceedings revealed that Greenhill's criminal history includes a previous conviction from 23 years ago for sex crimes against a girl, highlighting a troubling pattern of behavior.According to the prosecution, represented by David Outterside, the victim, who was a teenage boy at the time, described the impact of Greenhill’s actions as profoundly damaging. The victim expressed that the inappropriate behavior made him feel terrible and that he did not initially recognize it as wrong. It was only later in life that he understood the severity of what had happened to him. The court was informed that the victim, who also disclosed having been abused by others in the past, chose not to report Greenhill’s misconduct until the previous year, indicating a long period of silence and suffering.
Mr. Outterside emphasized the significant toll the abuse had taken on the victim’s life, affecting his education, childhood, and overall well-being. The victim also reported that the trauma had even impacted his health, underscoring the lasting effects of Greenhill’s actions.
Greenhill’s defense, represented by Clive Stockwell, acknowledged his client’s admission of guilt and his recognition of the wrongdoing. Mr. Stockwell pointed out that Greenhill had admitted to the police that his conduct was inappropriate and deserved punishment. He also noted that Greenhill had previously served a nine-month sentence in 1989 for two counts of indecent assault on a teenage girl, indicating a history of similar offenses.
Despite his past, Mr. Stockwell stated that Greenhill had not been involved in any trouble since his previous conviction. The court was told that Greenhill had accepted responsibility for his actions, which warranted a custodial sentence.
Judge Ebraham Mooncey addressed Greenhill directly, emphasizing the importance of public safety and the protection of children. He ordered that upon release, Greenhill must comply with a sexual offences prevention order. This order prohibits him from living in the same household as anyone under 18 without social services’ approval. The judge made it clear that although the offenses occurred when Greenhill was younger, justice had finally caught up with him. The order aims to prevent any future harm and ensure that Greenhill does not have contact with children in a manner that could be harmful.
Furthermore, Greenhill was informed that he is prohibited from working with children in any capacity and is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing measures necessary to safeguard the community, particularly vulnerable minors in Alvaston and beyond.
