JAMES GAVIN, ROCHDALE PAEDOPHILE AND FORMER SOCIAL WORKER, SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS IN PRISON

In a case that has shocked the community of Rochdale, James Gavin, a former social worker, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 17 years after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences committed decades ago. Gavin, aged 82, was described by authorities as a “twisted and manipulative predator” who exploited his position of trust to prey on a vulnerable young boy during the 1970s.

Gavin’s crimes took place while the victim was in foster care and residing at the Foxholes Children’s Home in Rochdale. The court proceedings revealed that Gavin, who lived on College Bank Way in Rochdale, had access to the boy through his role as a social worker, which he used to carry out repeated acts of sexual abuse. The offences included four counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted serious sexual assault on a child.

The court heard harrowing details of how Gavin would take the boy to secluded locations where he would commit these heinous acts. The young victim, out of fear of repercussions or disbelief, chose not to disclose the abuse to his carers at the time. Gavin also used threats to silence him, further complicating the victim’s ability to seek help. It was only in 2015 that the victim bravely reported the abuse to the police, leading to Gavin’s arrest and subsequent investigation.

During police interviews, Gavin denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence despite the overwhelming evidence against him. The case was prosecuted at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, where Gavin was found guilty of the charges. The court’s verdict marked a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for victims of historic abuse.

PC Karen Bancroft, a police officer from Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale borough, expressed her condemnation of Gavin’s actions. She stated, “Gavin preyed on a vulnerable boy who should have been cared for and supported during an unsettling time in his life. Instead, for his own sick sexual gratification, he sexually abused him knowing the distress it would cause. Not once did he care about the emotional damage he was inflicting on an innocent child who has had to carry this pain with him his entire life. Gavin is a twisted, manipulative predator and thanks to the courage of the victim, his patience and his strength, he is now where he belongs.”

Earlier in May 2018, Gavin was found guilty of five counts of historic sexual offences, including indecent assaults and attempted buggery, committed between 1970 and 1978. The jury, which reached a majority verdict of 10-2 and 11-1, convicted him of four counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14, with incidents spanning from 1973 to 1975 and one in 1978-1979, as well as an attempted buggery of a boy under 16 during the same period. Gavin, born on April 20, 1936, had pleaded not guilty but was convicted after the jury’s deliberation.

He is scheduled to appear again at Minshull Street Crown Court for sentencing next month, where the full extent of his punishment will be determined. This case underscores the importance of justice for victims of historic abuse and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to account, regardless of how much time has passed.
