JAMES EMMERTON SENTENCED IN SHEFFORD FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 7-YEAR-OLD BOY

In a serious case that has shocked the community of Shefford, Bedfordshire, a man named James Emmerton has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a young boy. The incident, which took place in July 2012, involved the victim, who was only seven years old at the time, and occurred at Emmerton's residence on Pinemead in Shefford.

Emmerton, aged 29 at the time of sentencing, faced a trial at Luton Crown Court where he maintained a plea of not guilty regarding the allegations. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the assault, which reportedly happened inside Emmerton's home while several children were present, playing computer games. The jury was informed that Emmerton had taken the young boy, now aged nine, into his bedroom and subjected him to a sexual assault. The assault only ceased when Emmerton heard footsteps approaching from upstairs, indicating that others were nearby.

The victim took three months to disclose the assault to his parents, a delay that underscores the trauma and difficulty often faced by young victims in coming forward. Once the disclosure was made, the parents immediately contacted Bedfordshire Police to report the incident. Following a thorough investigation, the jury found Emmerton guilty of sexual assault on the boy.

On the day of sentencing, Emmerton was handed a prison term of two and a half years, amounting to 30 months behind bars. Additionally, he was subjected to a 10-year Sex Offenders Prevention Order, which aims to restrict his activities and monitor his behavior to prevent any future offenses.

DC Clare Steel-Jessop from Bedfordshire Police expressed her support for the victim and emphasized the importance of bravery in coming forward. She stated, “First and foremost I want to praise the victim who came forward in very difficult circumstances to tell his parents about the sexual assault that he suffered. If it hadn’t have been for his bravery then Emmerton could still be a free man.”

She also highlighted the ongoing efforts of Bedfordshire Police to combat sexual crimes against children, reaffirming their commitment to justice. “Sexual assault on a child is a terrible crime and Bedfordshire Police continues to do everything possible to identify offenders and bring them to justice. I hope that this conviction and sentence goes some way to show victims of sexual assault that they will be believed and action can be taken.”
