JAMES DYSON AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN HULL
A disturbing incident involving a man named James Dyson, who resides on James Reckitt Avenue in Hull, has shocked the local community.Dyson, an ex-soldier with a history of military service, was involved in an appalling act of sexual assault targeting a teenage girl.
The events unfolded on August 7, 2020, at St Andrew's Quay, a well-known location in Hull, where Dyson was parked in his camper van.
According to reports presented in Hull Crown Court, Dyson made contact with the girl through online messaging prior to their meeting.
The girl, only 14 years old at the time, had been in communication with Dyson via Snapchat, a popular social media platform among teenagers.
Despite knowing her age, Dyson arranged to meet her in person, which set the stage for the subsequent assault.
The court heard that Dyson was seen sitting in the open side area of his white camper van when a vigilant security guard on duty at St Andrew's Quay observed his suspicious behavior through CCTV footage.
The guard noticed two girls nearby and decided to scrutinize the footage more closely.
It was at this point that the guard saw Dyson pull the 14-year-old girl towards him, then proceed to kiss and cuddle her inappropriately.
The footage showed Dyson placing his arm around her and touching her leg, actions that clearly indicated a sexual intent.
During the confrontation caught on camera, Dyson physically pulled the girl closer despite her efforts to get away.
He remained seated inside the van, seemingly unfazed by her protests.
The security guard quickly recorded the camper van's registration number and plus alerted the police about the incident.
Officers responded swiftly, locating Dyson nearby and arresting him at the scene.
Further investigations revealed that Dyson had previously met the girl several times through Snapchat.
The girl later expressed feelings of fear and distress following the incident, admitting that she was scared and unable to sleep due to the trauma of what had transpired.
It was also discovered that Dyson's phone contained the girl’s personal details, and he had checked out websites belonging to paedophile hunters, possibly to determine whether he was being monitored or tricked.
Dyson claimed he believed the girl was 16 at the time of their meeting, but he admitted to knowing her actual age, which was confirmed to be 14.
He confessed to grabbing the girl, cuddling her, and kissing her while she was sitting on his knee.
During sentencing, it became evident that this act involved a significant level of premeditation, rooted in their prior online discussions.
The court heard emotional testimony about Dyson's background.
He had served in the Army from ages 16 to 23, with deployments that included Northern Ireland, Canada, and Germany before leaving military service to focus on family life.
His mitigation lawyer, Rachel Scott, emphasized that Dyson felt profound remorse for his actions and was disgusted with himself.
She described his history of convictions for drink-driving and theft but highlighted his military service and current remorse.
Scott emphasized Dyson’s remorseful state and his assertion that he did not want to repeat this kind of offending.
Despite his remorse, the seriousness of his actions, given the victim’s vulnerability and her young age, was underscored in the court proceedings.
The judge sentenced Dyson to a 16-month prison sentence, suspended for best behavior, along with 200 hours of unpaid community service, a 30-day rehabilitation program, and participation in a 35-day course.
Additionally, Dyson was subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender for the same period.
