LIVERPOOL MAN JAILED INDEFINITELY FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ATTACK

At Liverpool Crown Court, James Donohue, 34, was sentenced to an indefinite prison term after assaulting his girlfriend, Emma Burns, with a claw hammer, which led to her death.

The court was informed that Donohue, during a three-day period marked by alcohol and drug use, carried out the attack following a night out in Liverpool.

The assault started at approximately 4am on October 29 outside Lime Street station, after they had spent the evening at Fudge nightclub.

He pushed Emma to the ground and kicked her in the face, amid suspicions that she was flirting with a neighbor.

Later that day, Donohue forcibly entered Emma’s residence on Portrush Street in Tuebrook and continued his violent assault with a hammer.

Although she refused medical treatment initially, Emma suffered severe head injuries including a brain hemorrhage, which caused her death days later.

Donohue was detained but claimed Emma fell during the initial attack; yet, medical evidence pointed to extensive trauma to her skull.

Although he faced trial for murder, Donohue pleaded guilty to manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm with intent because experts could not determine which specific injury caused her death.

During the sentencing hearing, Emma’s 11-year-old son was present and silent before being taken out of the courtroom.

The judge, Mrs.

Justice Swift, sentenced him to an indeterminate term for public protection, with a minimum of nine years before being considered for parole.

Prosecutor Michael Shorrock described their relationship as volatile and tense, although they had not shared a home for eight months prior to the incident.

Donohue’s criminal record included 55 prior convictions, mainly for burglary and dishonesty offenses.

His defense team expressed remorse and emphasized his love for Emma, stating he was ashamed and devastated by his actions.

Emma Burns, aged 31, died due to serious head injuries sustained during the violent assault by Donohue.

Evidence showed that driven by jealousy and anger, Donohue attacked Emma on the street and later in her home, as captured on CCTV footage that showed him arguing and kicking her in the face.

After the attack, he fled from the scene in a taxi, leaving Emma critically injured.

Her family publicly expressed their grief, and the court’s sentencing recognized the severe consequences of domestic abuse.

The case highlights the importance of intervention and ongoing support services for victims of domestic violence.
