In a recent court case held in July 2013, a man from Thornaby who admitted to engaging in a sexual encounter with a schoolgirl has avoided immediate imprisonment. The defendant, James Dickinson, aged 20, faced charges related to his inappropriate conduct with a minor, which has garnered significant attention due to the sensitive nature of the case.

During the hearing, Judge Peter Bowers addressed Dickinson directly, expressing his concerns about the defendant's mental health and the potential difficulties he would face if incarcerated.
