JAMES CRAFT FROM ACCRINGTON SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENDER BREACH AT LIBRARY

In September 2014, James Craft, a known sex offender from Accrington, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of breaching his sexual offences order. The court heard that Craft, aged 24, had used false identities to access inappropriate online content, including fetish pornography and a swingers website, while at Accrington Library.

Craft’s criminal history is extensive, with two prior convictions for sexual activity involving a minor when he was himself a minor, and a total of 14 convictions related to breaches of requirement orders dating back to 2004. His repeated violations highlight a troubling pattern of non-compliance with legal restrictions designed to monitor and control his activities as a registered sex offender.

Between June and August of that year, Craft reportedly used three different aliases on more than 40 occasions to access these websites. Court proceedings revealed that staff members at the hostel where he was residing on Lydia Street in Accrington became increasingly concerned about his whereabouts during the daytime. Their concerns prompted them to alert police authorities.

On August 12, law enforcement officers arrested Craft at Accrington Library, suspecting that he had violated his notification requirements. Subsequently, at Burnley Crown Court on September 8, he pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to comply with the conditions of his registration as a sex offender and for using false names to access online content.

During the hearing, his defense solicitor, Paul Robinson, explained that Craft had struggled with learning difficulties, which contributed to social challenges and problematic behavior. Robinson emphasized that, despite his past issues, Craft did not cause trouble at the hostel and there was no indication that staff were unaware of his whereabouts. He also clarified that Craft did not use false names to access content involving children, nor was there evidence suggesting that the sites accessed were illegal.

Judge Newell, presiding over the case, issued a stern warning to Craft, who resides on Lang Street in Blackpool. The judge underscored that repeated breaches of court orders would lead to increasingly lengthy prison sentences. He remarked, “This is the ninth time you have appeared before a court for a criminal offence. Only two of those offences involved actual harm to a person; the rest are violations of court orders. Your continued non-compliance will result in longer and longer sentences.”

Judge Newell concluded by stating, “It is essential that you comply with the orders. If you do, there will be no problem. But if you fail to do so, prison is inevitable. A punitive sentence is necessary to serve as a warning.” The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in managing repeat offenders and ensuring compliance with legal restrictions meant to protect the public from potential harm.
