James Carpenter

Bristol Sexual Abuser

July 2019 Judge calls OAP a ‘pervert’ for the degrading pictures on his computer A sex offender who obtained videos of babies being raped said he has turned to Buddha for enlightenment. James Carpenter was the subject of a court order banning him from deleting his internet history. But police managing him established he was still up to his ghastly antics and he was arrested. His barrister told Bristol Crown Court his client has since pursued a Buddhist way of life and was not tempted to re-offend. Carpenter, 71, of Orchard Court in Barton Hill, pleaded guilty to four charges of making indecent photographs of children. He also admitted two breaches of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. Judge Mark Horton jailed him for 14 months. He told Carpenter: “You are and have been part of a group of men in society who conceal the dark secret that they sit in private rooms in order to download photographs and films which depict, in graphic detail, the most appalling degradation and sexual abuse of young children. “We are talking babies. Children being raped and abused and they know, for the rest of their lives, those photographs and films remain forever out there on the internet for perverts like you to watch and enjoy.” Richard Posner, prosecuting, said Carpenter was the subject of a court order banning him from unchecked internet use. But police monitoring him established he had used a cleaning app on his computer devices which enabled the deletion of data. Inquiries revealed he had used specific search terms and acquired some 6,000 child abuse images. These included 974 in the most serious Category A as well as two Category A movies which showed youngsters aged two and six being raped. Carpenter told police he wasn’t technically savvy and initially didn’t accept an effort to avoid detection. The court heard he had a previous conviction for indecently assaulting a lad aged under 16 as well as making indecent photos of children.
