JAMES BRUM PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN NEWPORT
A disturbing case of child sexual exploitation unfolded in Newport, involving James Brum, a 39-year-old man whose actions have left a lasting impact on his young victim. The court heard that Brum systematically groomed a schoolgirl before engaging in multiple acts of abuse, involving manipulation and psychological control.
According to the details presented in Cardiff Crown Court, Brum coerced the girl into wearing lingerie during their encounters, which he purchased specifically for this purpose.
His manipulative tactics included convincing her that she was part of his secret club, thereby deepening her psychological dependence on him.
Over the course of their illicit relationship, Brum engaged in sexual activity with the girl on no fewer than seven separate occasions.
Prosecutor Rachel Knight summarized the grim nature of the case, describing how Brum explicitly told the victim after their first encounter that, "You really wanted it." She further explained that his grooming involved more than just physical acts: he also solicited explicit photographs from her, asking her to send nude images.
The court heard testimony regarding Brum’s manipulation, with Knight stating, "The defendant groomed his victim.
He bought lingerie for her to wear during their encounters.
She would wear these at his request.
You used her to satisfy your sexual urges." The young girl’s impact statement revealed the devastating effects of Brum’s abuse.
She recounted experiencing flashbacks and feeling uncomfortable around men since the events took place.
She expressed her anguish, saying, "He targeted me specifically for his sexual desires.
I feel uncomfortable around men now.
Nothing will change what James Brum has done to me, and he's had a huge impact on my future.
He has stolen my childhood from me and he has stolen my virginity." In court, Brum entered guilty pleas to multiple charges including seven counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
His previous conduct was noted as being of good character, with no prior convictions.
Gareth Williams, representing Brum, requested that the court take into consideration his client’s guilty pleas, highlighting that Brum did not contest the allegations during the trial and had acknowledged the truth of the victim’s account.
Williams stated, "The evidence was overwhelming.
He’s sorry for what happened." Judge Michael Fitton QC addressed Brum directly during sentencing, condemning his actions as a reprehensible abuse of trust.
The judge emphasized that Brum’s conduct constituted a classic case of grooming and noted the severity of the crimes committed.
Declaring the behavior as an "appalling campaign of sexual abuse," Judge Fitton sentenced Brum to eight years in prison.
The sentence includes a requirement for him to serve two-thirds of his term before being eligible for release on licence.
Additionally, Brum will be subject to lifelong registration as a sex offender and must comply with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
Upon release, he will also be required to pay a victims surcharge.
Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Mike Patterson commended the bravery of the victim.
He remarked, "The victim in this case has been incredibly brave throughout.
It is their courage and strength that has ultimately led to the conviction of Brum, who will now be sentenced for these horrific crimes." This case highlights the devastating impact of grooming and child sexual abuse, and reflects the justice served in this troubling case from Newport.
