JAMES AND JACQUELINE MCGRORY FROM AIRDRIE CONVICTED OVER DOG'S SUFFERING AND DEATH

James and Jacqueline McGrory, residents of Oronsay Road in Airdrie, faced serious legal consequences after their neglect led to the suffering and eventual euthanasia of their elderly dog, Penny. The couple was found guilty of causing unnecessary pain and distress to their pet by neglecting her urgent veterinary needs.

In May 2018, an anonymous tip prompted the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to investigate reports of neglect at the McGrorys' residence. Upon arrival, an inspector observed Penny, a black and tan female collie, in a dire state. The dog was suffering from severe alopecia, with sores covering her body, and was struggling to stand on her feet. The home environment was described as having a strong, unpleasant odor, indicating poor living conditions.

The inspector cautioned Mr. McGrory and informed him that he was under investigation for neglect. It was evident that Penny had been left untreated for her skin condition for several weeks, which had worsened to the point where her suffering could no longer be ignored. The veterinarian who examined Penny stated that any responsible owner would have sought medical attention for her much earlier.

Following the discovery, Penny was taken to a veterinary clinic for immediate treatment. Despite efforts to save her, her condition did not improve. She was suffering from a bacterial infection, with pus leaking from her sores, and she exhibited signs of pain when touched. Due to her deteriorating health and to prevent further suffering, the decision was made to euthanise her. Penny was subsequently transferred to a rehoming center, where she was classified as grossly obese and in poor health.

Post-mortem examinations suggested that Penny might have been exposed to a toxic substance, but this was not conclusively proven. The Scottish SPCA's investigation revealed that Penny's neglect had persisted for several weeks, leading to irreversible damage. The court heard that the failure of the McGrorys to seek veterinary care was a critical factor in her suffering.

In sentencing, the court ordered the McGrorys to pay £300 to cover the costs incurred by the Scottish SPCA. Additionally, they received a ban from owning animals for five years, which expired in November 2023. The case highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the severe consequences of neglecting vulnerable animals in the Airdrie community.
