JAMES ALGIE FROM KIRKCALDY INVOLVED IN BRUTAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCIDENT IN ROSYTH

James Algie, a 55-year-old resident of Elder Place in Rosyth, has a long-standing and troubling history of domestic violence that has repeatedly brought him before the courts. His past includes violent assaults involving the use of knives, smothering tactics, and numerous threats to take lives. Court records from Dunfermline Sheriff Court reveal that Algie has been convicted multiple times for his aggressive and dangerous behavior, including a guilty plea to assault causing injury in 2017.

On the night of February 20, Algie consumed an entire litre of vodka before launching a violent attack on his partner, who was staying at his home. The assault was particularly severe and frightening, with witnesses describing how Algie pushed his partner onto a couch, then proceeded to smother her with a cushion while she struggled to breathe. During this terrifying episode, he also brandished a steak knife, running the blade across her body, causing her to suffer multiple bruises and head injuries.

The situation escalated further when Algie cut her leggings and made threats to “cut her throat and his own,” displaying a dangerous level of instability and violence. He held her down on the floor, shouting threats that could be heard by neighbors, who were alarmed by the screams and called emergency services. The victim managed to escape through a window and contacted 999, the emergency number, to seek help. Her injuries included bruising and head trauma, highlighting the brutality of the assault.

In court, Sheriff Craig McSherry considered the case carefully. Despite the seriousness of the attack, he decided against imposing a custodial sentence. Instead, Algie was ordered to complete a Community Payback Order, which includes 80 hours of unpaid work, and was placed under a six-month Restriction of Liberty Order, involving a curfew and electronic tagging. During the proceedings, Algie’s solicitor argued that his client had no memory of the incident due to his alcohol consumption. However, this defense did little to mitigate the fact that Algie had a prior conviction for assault to injury, which he pled guilty to in January 2017 at the same court in Dunfermline.

Algie’s history of violence and the recent incident in Rosyth underscore ongoing concerns about his behavior and the risks he poses to those around him. The case continues to draw attention to issues of domestic violence and the importance of intervention and support for victims.
