JAKE SMITH'S BRUTAL CRUELTY IN RISCA: FRENCH BULLDOG PUPPY BEATEN TO DEATH

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Risca, Newport, a man named Jake Smith, also known as Jay Jones, has been convicted of heinous animal cruelty. Born on December 30, 1998, Smith resides at 1 Gardd Y Meddyg in Risca, and works as a kitchen and bedroom fitter. His crime involved the brutal abuse and subsequent death of a young French bulldog puppy named Rio.

According to court records and evidence presented during the trial, Smith subjected the innocent puppy to multiple severe beatings over a period of time. The injuries inflicted were extensive and traumatic, ultimately leading to Rio’s death. Police officers who responded to the scene found the puppy dead, with injuries that included a fractured jaw, fractured ribs, a broken leg, and a collapsed lung. The puppy, only a few months old, was discovered in a pool of blood, having suffered injuries of such severity that they could only be described as deliberate and non-accidental.

During the proceedings at Newport Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Darren Bishop, representing the RSPCA, detailed the gravity of the abuse. He stated, “This investigation involves the alleged abuse of a French bulldog which was found deceased by police and discovered to have blunt force trauma injuries of a non-accidental nature. This dog had sustained significant blunt force trauma on at least four separate occasions – fractured left front leg, fractured jaw, blows to the top of the head, chest, and injuries. The fourth episode of blunt force trauma resulted in the dog’s death via lung collapse. There had been prolonged or deliberate ill-treatment or neglect.”

Further details revealed that police were called to Smith’s flat amid concerns about his mental health. During the visit, Smith claimed he had left the dog in the bath until it drowned, a statement that was inconsistent with the findings of the post-mortem examination. The police found that Smith was not at his residence when they arrived, and his explanation did not align with the evidence provided by experts. The post-mortem, conducted by Liverpool University’s pathology department, confirmed the extensive injuries Rio had sustained.

The court established that the abuse occurred between August 1 and August 17, 2022. Notably, Smith had no prior convictions, and his legal representative, Ian George, emphasized that Smith had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. George also highlighted Smith’s troubled background and mental health struggles, noting that he was experiencing a mental health episode at the time and had expressed suicidal thoughts. He argued that Smith was not inherently cruel and expressed remorse for his actions, stating, “He should have contacted the RSPCA for the dog to be rehoused.”

In sentencing, Smith received a 16-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities, pay costs of £500, and a surcharge of £154. Importantly, he was banned from keeping any animals for a period of 10 years, a ban that will expire in May 2033. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Risca, raising concerns about animal welfare and mental health issues within the area.
