JAKE RICH FROM NEWTOWN SENTENCED FOR ABDUCTION AND SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING MINORS
In April 2017, a man named Jake Rich, aged 20 and residing in Newtown, was sentenced to a total of 26 months in prison following a series of disturbing criminal acts involving minors. The case was heard at Mold Crown Court, where Judge Rhys Rowlands delivered a stern judgment against Rich, highlighting the severity of his actions and his apparent lack of understanding of appropriate conduct around children. The prosecution, led by Anna Pope, detailed how Rich had established an online friendship with a 13-year-old boy from the north of England. The boy’s parents described him as vulnerable, which appeared to have made him an easy target for Rich’s manipulative behavior. Over the course of their online interactions, Rich encouraged the young boy to undertake a six-hour train journey to meet him in Newtown, an act that raised immediate concerns for authorities. When the boy arrived, police were alerted by his parents, and officers subsequently located him at Rich’s residence in Newtown.
During the court proceedings, Rich denied any sexual interest in the 13-year-old victim, despite admitting that they had been naked together in bed. However, he did confess to child abduction and also acknowledged engaging in sexual activity with another teenage boy who was known to him, during an earlier incident the previous year. The court was informed that police interviewed Rich after social care staff reported the encounters, which further implicated him in these serious offenses.
Judge Rhys Rowlands did not hold back in his remarks, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He pointed out that the 13-year-old boy had slept next to Rich and shared a bed with him, a clear indication of inappropriate conduct. The judge also noted that Rich had committed two sexual offenses against another teenage boy, further demonstrating a pattern of harmful behavior.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Rowlands expressed concern over Rich’s criminal history, which included convictions for violence, robbery, and failure to comply with court orders. The judge stated, “It is quite plain to me you have no idea at all how to behave with young children.” He also highlighted the law’s primary purpose: to protect children from harm. The court assessed Rich as posing a very high risk of re-offending and causing further harm to minors, which influenced the length and nature of his sentence.
Rich was sentenced to two months for breaching a previous suspended sentence order, six months for the sexual activity with the teenage boy, and 18 months for child abduction. These sentences are to run consecutively, meaning one after the other. Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years.
Furthermore, Judge Rowlands criticized the Crown Prosecution Service for not charging Rich with grooming, a serious offense that could have reflected the manipulative nature of his actions. He announced that he would be requesting a report from the CPS to investigate why more serious charges were not pursued, indicating concern over the adequacy of the prosecution’s case.
Overall, the case underscores the dangers posed by individuals like Rich, who exploit online platforms and manipulate vulnerable minors for their own harmful purposes, and highlights the importance of stringent legal measures to protect children from such predators.
