JAKE BARKER OF NOTTINGHAM CAUGHT RED-HANDED AFTER MULTIPLE THEFTS AND FAILING TO REGISTER AS SEX OFFENDER
In a series of criminal activities spanning several months, Jake Barker, a resident of Nottingham, found himself back behind bars after a series of thefts and a failure to comply with legal registration requirements.Barker, who previously served a four-year sentence in 2016 for a sexual assault committed in Hyson Green, was mandated to regularly sign the sex offender register as part of his parole conditions.
Despite these obligations, Barker repeatedly neglected to fulfill his registration duties, which ultimately led to his re-incarceration.
His most recent release from prison occurred in February of this year, but his criminal behavior persisted.
On April 24, Barker committed a theft at the Slug and Lettuce pub located on Forman Street, where he stole a wallet from a coat.
This act was followed by another theft on June 4, when he stole a mobile phone from a McDonald's restaurant situated on St.
Peter's Street in Derby.
Law enforcement agencies launched investigations into both incidents, circulating Barker’s mugshot among police colleagues in an effort to locate him.
Despite these efforts, officers had not been able to apprehend him until a surprising turn of events on Tuesday, August 27.
Barker, aged 30, walked directly into the Central Police Station at Byron House, situated at the top of Maid Marian Way, ostensibly to sign the sex offender register—a task he had failed to complete regularly.
When staff at the station entered his name into their system, they quickly realized that Barker was wanted for the recent thefts.
Recognizing him as the suspect, police officers promptly arrested him on the spot.
During questioning, Barker chose to answer all questions with a silence of 'no comment,' but the authorities already possessed enough evidence to proceed with formal charges.
On Wednesday, August 28, Barker appeared before Nottingham Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.
The court sentenced him to 38 weeks in prison and ordered him to pay a total of £100 in compensation to the victims of his thefts.
Nottinghamshire Police’s PC Roger Weir commented on the case, emphasizing Barker’s long history of criminal activity.
He stated, “Barker is a prolific offender who has shown a flagrant disregard for the law over many years.
“He showed some signs of improvement by attending an appointment this week to sign the sex offenders register, but was ignorant to the fact we knew about his recent acquisitive crimes.
I am pleased he has been dealt with quickly by the courts and is back in prison.
Hopefully this time he will finally get the message that crime has very real consequences.
Put simply, if you carry on committing offences after you’ve been released from custody, you will continue to see a prison cell.”
