STOKE-ON-TRENT ANIMAL ABUSE: JACQUELINE AND PETER PORTINGLE'S HORRIFIC NEGLECT REVEALED

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community of Stoke-on-Trent, Jacqueline and Peter Portingale, a couple with a history of breeding and participating in prestigious dog shows such as Crufts, have been found guilty of severe animal welfare violations. The couple, originally from Lower Weare, Somerset, but now residing in Stoke-on-Trent, faced justice after a series of neglectful acts that left their animals suffering from untreated health issues.

Animal welfare inspectors from the RSPCA responded to concerns raised about the couple’s former residence on Turnpike Road in May 2019. The investigation uncovered a heartbreaking scene: multiple dogs and cats in a state of neglect, suffering from painful and untreated conditions that had been allowed to worsen over time. One of the dogs, affectionately known as Jack, was so severely affected that he had to be euthanized. Jack’s condition was dire, with a ruptured corneal ulcer in his left eye that was discharging eyeball contents, alongside issues with his right eye, a severe heart murmur, and an infected tooth.

Further examination revealed that two King Charles Spaniels also suffered from untreated eye problems, which had been left to deteriorate without veterinary intervention. Other animals, including additional dogs and cats, were found with severe dental diseases, some requiring urgent treatment. The cats, in particular, were in a deplorable state, with matted fur, overgrown claws—one of which had curled around to penetrate the pads of the toes—and dental neglect that caused them significant pain and discomfort. Veterinary experts concluded that the couple, as owners, should have sought professional veterinary advice to address these health issues, which could have alleviated or prevented much of the suffering inflicted upon their animals.

Following the court proceedings, RSPCA Inspector Jo Daniel emphasized the gravity of the case. She stated, “Judge Leyton made it clear that both defendants were responsible for the suffering of the animals due to their gross failure to act. The dental issues and neglect had been ongoing for many months, and the evidence of matted fur and dental disease in the cats was obvious.”

Thanks to the efforts of breed-specific rescue organizations, all the animals rescued from the Portingale household have been rehomed and are now receiving the care they need. The court handed down a sentence that includes a 16-week curfew, a fine of £425 in court costs for each defendant, and a seven-year ban on owning animals. This ban can be appealed after three years, providing a window for potential review of the restrictions.

Inspector Jo Daniel and the RSPCA continue to advocate for animal welfare, highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership and timely veterinary care to prevent such tragic neglect from occurring in the future.
