JACQUANI PHILLIPS FROM AMBROSEN SENTENCED FOR RAPE NEAR BICESTER

In May 2022, a disturbing case unfolded involving Jacquani Phillips, a 21-year-old man from Ambrosden, who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed near Bicester. The incident came to light after a teenage girl, who was under 18 at the time, woke up to find Phillips assaulting her. The victim, deeply traumatized by the ordeal, expressed her anguish in court, stating that she hoped Phillips 'rots in prison' after subjecting her to months of suffering.

The assault took place on October 10 of the previous year, during which Phillips was recorded on video engaging in the sexual assault. The victim, who was in court on a Tuesday afternoon to witness his sentencing, recounted how her life had come to a halt in the six months following the attack, as she struggled to cope with the aftermath and the ongoing legal proceedings.

In her impact statement, read aloud in Oxford Crown Court, she delivered a powerful and emotional message to Phillips, describing him as 'disgusting' and 'a horrible piece of work.' She concluded her statement with a stark wish for his future, saying, 'I honestly hope you rot in prison.'

Prosecutor Jonathan Stone detailed that on the night of the assault, the victim had taken medication that caused her to fall into a deep sleep. Despite this, she woke up three times during the night to find Phillips raping her in her bed. She made efforts to resist, elbowing him and shouting 'no,' clearly indicating her refusal to engage in sexual activity.

Further evidence was uncovered through police forensic analysis, which revealed videos stored on Phillips' phone. These videos, taken in the early hours of the night, appeared to show him molesting an unresponsive woman. Additionally, an explicit photograph was recovered from his device, further implicating him in the crimes.

Judge Nigel Daly sentenced Phillips to eight and a half years in prison. The judge clarified that Phillips would serve at least two-thirds of this sentence behind bars. In his remarks, Judge Daly stated that he had considered whether a life sentence was appropriate but concluded it was not. He also reviewed the possibility of applying dangerousness provisions, which could extend Phillips' license period, but decided they did not apply in this case.

As part of his sentence, Phillips was issued a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting his victim indefinitely. He will also be registered as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

It was noted that Phillips, who resides on Ploughley Road in Ambrosden, pleaded guilty to the charges of rape, sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault approximately one month prior to his trial date, avoiding a lengthy court process and further trauma for the victim.
