JACK PICKERING'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN HULL: SENTENCE UPHELD DESPITE OUTCRY

In a case that has shocked the community of Hull, Jack George Pickering, aged 65, has been involved in a series of heinous sexual offenses against young boys, crimes that span over four decades.

Despite public and legal calls for a harsher punishment, the Court of Appeal recently decided to uphold his current sentence, sparing him from a potential extension of his time behind bars.

Pickering, who formerly resided in Hull, was convicted of abusing two boys, both under the age of 13, more than 40 years ago.

These acts of sexual violence were only brought to light after he was already serving a 15-year sentence for other crimes committed against children.

In March of this year, he received an additional sentence of two years and two months at Hull Crown Court for indecency and indecent assaults involving the two young victims.

The case was escalated to the Court of Appeal in London on Thursday, May 24, following a referral by the Attorney General, Jeremy Wright QC.

The Attorney General argued that the sentence was 'unduly lenient' considering the severity of the offenses.

Paul Jarvis QC, representing the Attorney General, contended that the punishment did not adequately reflect the gravity of Pickering’s crimes against the vulnerable boys.

However, after a detailed hearing, three senior judges decided not to increase the sentence.

The judges ruled that the current sentence, which runs consecutively to the 15-year term Pickering is already serving, was within the range of what was reasonably and properly available to the sentencing judge.

Lord Justice Holroyde, speaking on behalf of the panel, acknowledged the seriousness of the offenses but also highlighted factors that influenced the original sentencing decision.

He explained that Pickering was only in his early 20s when the crimes occurred and is now in his mid-60s.

The judge also considered that Pickering was facing many more years of imprisonment under his 2016 sentence and that the experience of incarceration had been particularly difficult for him.

The judges accepted that the total sentence might seem lenient to some, but they emphasized that it was within the bounds of judicial discretion and proper sentencing practice.

Looking back to October 2016, Pickering was already convicted of raping and abusing four children, some as young as six years old.

During that trial, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Prosecutor John Thackray described how Pickering threatened his victims, even brandishing scissors on one occasion, and used a camera to record some of the abuse.

The victims’ personal statements painted a harrowing picture of lifelong trauma, with one contemplating suicide, another suffering from mood swings and aggression, and others battling low self-esteem, sleep issues, and shame.

At the time of the abuse, Pickering was living on the north Hull estate, specifically on 11th Avenue.

He pleaded guilty to 25 sexual offenses, including three counts of rape.

His defense lawyer, Patrick Palmer, expressed remorse on behalf of his client, emphasizing that Pickering was genuinely distressed and ashamed of his actions.

Palmer noted that pleas of guilty in such cases are rare, and that many offenders choose to deny their guilt despite overwhelming evidence.

Judge David Tremberg, presiding over the sentencing, condemned Pickering for using children as objects for his sexual gratification.

He described the case as particularly serious, noting the profound and lasting harm inflicted on the victims.

The judge stated that Pickering had robbed these children of their innocence and caused them emotional trauma that would likely affect them for life.

During the sentencing, Pickering was visibly emotional, weeping in the dock.

Judge Tremberg also addressed the issue of remorse, stating that while Pickering now claims to be remorseful, he was fully aware of his wrongdoings at the time.

The judge expressed concern that Pickering still posed a risk to children, asserting that if given unsupervised access to a child today, he would likely reoffend.

As a result, Pickering was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with the possibility of release on license after serving approximately half of that term.

The judge also added that due to recent changes in sex offender legislation, Pickering would be required to serve an additional year on license after his release.
