JACK GREEN OF GOLCAR SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO PUPPY IN NEWMARKET AND HUDDERSFIELD
Jack Green, a resident of Golcar near Huddersfield, was convicted of animal cruelty after a disturbing case involving a young Dachshund puppy named Pippin. The incident, which spanned from January 18, 2019, to May 2, 2019, revealed a pattern of neglect and abuse inflicted upon the defenseless animal.Green, who works as an agricultural worker, was prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service following a thorough investigation conducted by Suffolk Police. The court proceedings uncovered that Green subjected Pippin, a five-month-old puppy at the time, to repeated acts of cruelty that caused her significant suffering. The case drew attention not only because of the cruelty involved but also due to the puppy’s vulnerable age and the severity of her injuries.
The discovery of Pippin occurred on May 1, 2019, when police found her outside an address in Newmarket. She was visibly injured, with a white bandage wrapped around her right foreleg. Green claimed that the injury might have resulted from a fall from a vehicle. He further stated that he took her to a veterinarian, who advised him to treat the injury himself. In accordance with this advice, Green applied a makeshift bandage using duct tape and a toilet roll holder, a decision that raised concerns among the officers about her condition and the adequacy of her treatment.
Police officers, dissatisfied with Green’s explanation and the condition of Pippin, seized the puppy immediately and arranged for her to receive urgent veterinary care. The veterinarian confirmed that Pippin’s right foreleg was severely injured, requiring intensive treatment. The injury was indicative of significant trauma, and her condition necessitated ongoing medical attention.
Following her rescue, Pippin was placed into the care of the RSPCA and received regular veterinary visits every two days over a three-month period to change her bandages and monitor her recovery. During this time, she was also rehomed to a new family, where she continues to learn how to interact with her new environment and other animals. Her journey from suffering to recovery highlights the importance of animal welfare and the impact of proper care.
PC Victoria McNamara, a Wildlife Crime Officer with Suffolk Police, emphasized the importance of protecting animals from cruelty. She stated, “Animals of all kinds are often hidden victims of crime, and animal abuse can be a gateway to other offences. It is wholly unacceptable to cause suffering to any animal, and we will investigate and prosecute those offenders, bringing them to justice.”
McNamara further described Pippin’s case, noting that the puppy had endured cruelty during her first few months of life. She weighed only 3.1kg and was on pain relief for several weeks due to her fractured leg. Thanks to proper care, nutrition, and love, Pippin has since flourished. The collaborative efforts of Suffolk Police, West Yorkshire Police, and the Criminal Justice Unit, including officers like A/PS Rebecca Webster and Case Management Officer Jo Foley, played a crucial role in ensuring justice for Pippin.
Green was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody, ordered to pay £200 in compensation, and was disqualified from owning animals for five years, a ban that will expire in June 2025. This case underscores the ongoing commitment of law enforcement and animal welfare organizations to combat cruelty and protect vulnerable animals in the region.
