IRMAN ALI JAILED FOR NINE YEARS IN CARDIFF AFTER FLEEING TO THAILAND FOR SEX ABUSE
In a significant case that has drawn widespread attention, Irman Ali, a 53-year-old man from Moira Street in Cardiff, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for serious sexual abuse offences committed against a young girl. The case took a dramatic turn when Ali, who was scheduled to stand trial in Cardiff, chose to flee the country just days before his court appearance, leading to a lengthy international manhunt and his eventual extradition from Thailand.
Ali’s arrest and subsequent extradition marked the culmination of nearly four years of efforts by law enforcement agencies to bring him back to face justice.
The police managed to locate and apprehend him in Thailand, where he had been residing after fleeing the UK.
Following his return, Ali appeared before Cardiff Crown Court to face the charges that had been brought against him.
Last year, a jury found Ali guilty in his absence of 15 counts of sexual abuse.
The court heard that Ali had engaged in a disturbing pattern of grooming and abusing a vulnerable young girl.
The judge, Patrick Curran QC, described how Ali had manipulated the victim by making her watch pornographic films with him, a tactic aimed at desensitizing and controlling her.
The court was informed that the abuse escalated over time, causing the young girl to suffer immense psychological trauma.
It was only when she found the courage to report the abuse that the authorities could intervene.
Ali’s initial arrest occurred in 2008, and he was granted bail while awaiting trial later that year.
However, just days before his scheduled court appearance, he made the decision to flee the UK, traveling to Thailand.
During his time abroad, Ali married a Thai woman, which he claimed was part of his plan to return to the UK for his trial.
He later alleged that his plans were thwarted when a corrupt official stole his passport and demanded a ransom of £500 for its return, preventing him from returning to face justice.
For four years, Ali remained at large, evading law enforcement efforts.
It was only after a persistent investigation that authorities tracked him down.
Following his arrest in Thailand, he was held in a Thai prison for six months before being extradited back to the UK to face sentencing.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Curran QC delivered a stern message to Ali, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
The judge stated, “You were careful to groom her, convincing her that what you were doing was normal.” He further condemned Ali’s actions, saying, “It is no exaggeration to say that you ruined her life.
What you did mounted to a campaign of sex abuse against her.” The court was also informed of the devastating impact Ali’s abuse had on his young victim.
Since discovering the full extent of the crimes, the girl had suffered from self-harm and, on one occasion, attempted to take her own life, highlighting the profound psychological scars left by Ali’s actions.
Ali was sentenced to serve a minimum of half his prison term before being eligible for parole.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case has sparked criticism from the victim’s mother, who expressed frustration over the legal process.
She criticized the authorities for granting Ali bail after his initial arrest, arguing that if he had been kept in custody, the crimes might have been prevented or addressed years earlier.
“If he was not allowed to leave the country, this would all have been dealt with years ago,” she said.
“It has added more stress and anxiety, and it makes me angry because the authorities were warned that he was going to leave yet they did nothing.
They had a chance to stop him and they let him go.”
