DUBLIN COURT DELYERS IOSIF ANTILI'S SENTENCE OVER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE
In July 2014, a Romanian man identified as Iosif Antili, aged 41 and residing at St Ignatius Avenue, Dublin 7, was involved in a case concerning the possession of child abuse images at a Dublin hostel.Antili pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing child pornography, committed on December 6, 2010, and January 13, 2011.
Judge Mary Ellen Ring of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court noted that while there was no evidence he distributed the images, she recognized that accessing such material was "not a victimless crime" and emphasized that the children depicted had likely been abused, even if they could not be identified.
Although initially sentenced to two and a half years in prison, the court fully suspended the sentence on the condition that Antili continues attending counselling.
Garda Neil Woods testified that the child abuse images came to light following the theft of Antili’s laptop.
Antili approached the hostel manager, Paula Fagan, claiming his laptop had been stolen, and she lent him her personal laptop as he was a long-time resident.
When he returned the device in January 2011, Ms.
Fagan noticed alterations such as a new toolbar and different browser, with access to several disturbing sites, including those related to underage and baby pornography.
Shocked by the content, she contacted Gardaí, who seized the laptop and found 89 illegal images.
Further searches on April 15, 2011, at Antili’s home uncovered another Samsung laptop with 12 image files and three video clips depicting child pornography.
Antili was detained and when questioned, stated he had only accessed adult content and that images of children appeared unexpectedly.
He claimed no interest in children and asserted he had been helping homeless children in Romania.
The authorities described the content as showing girls aged between 8 and 14, in states of nudity or semi-nudity, with exposed genitalia.
A notable video clip, downloaded multiple times, portrayed a 10-year-old girl performing oral sex.
Defense lawyer Justin McQuade explained that Antili had entered an early guilty plea, highlighting that he was a solitary man employed full-time at a restaurant, supporting his family in Romania through remittances.
He also added that Antili had no prior criminal record, was considered a model citizen otherwise, and was actively participating in therapy sessions twice monthly.
