IAN WILLET AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER BREACHES IN WATERLOOVILLE AND ISLE OF WIGHT

A serious incident involving Ian Willett occurred at the Newport bus station on the Isle of Wight, where he assaulted a woman and forcibly dragged her towards Church Litten Park. Fortunately, the woman resisted her attacker fiercely and managed to escape from Willett's grasp, preventing what could have been a much more severe crime.

Following his recent release from prison, Willett was required to reside at an approved premises in Waterlooville. As part of his post-release conditions, he was mandated to inform police of any change of address within three days, including if he had no fixed abode. Additionally, he was obliged to register any online usernames with Hampshire Constabulary, a critical part of his sex offender notification requirements. These measures are designed to monitor and control sex offenders and to prevent re-offending.

On June 5, Willett breached these conditions by absconding from his approved premises. Subsequent investigations revealed that Willett had created multiple online usernames that he failed to register with the authorities, further violating his legal obligations. His disappearance prompted a police appeal to the public for assistance in locating him, which garnered substantial community support.

On the very same day the appeal was issued, police officers tracked Willett to the Isle of Wight, where he was promptly arrested. Following his apprehension, Willett faced charges in relation to his violations of sex offender notification requirements. He was formally charged yesterday with two counts of non-compliance concerning these requirements.

Willett, aged 23, was also recalled to prison for breaching his license conditions and is set to serve the remainder of his previous prison sentence. During a court appearance at Isle of Wight Magistrates Court, he admitted to the breaches of notification requirements. As a consequence, Willett received an additional eight months in prison, along with orders to pay a fine of 85 pounds in costs and a victim surcharge of 128 pounds.

Acting Detective Inspector Mark Edis issued a statement praising the swift police response and community cooperation. He emphasized that Willett’s arrest occurred mere hours after the public appeal was published. Detective Edis also highlighted the importance of license conditions and notification obligations, which are legally binding and intended to safeguard the public by reducing the risk of re-offence. He acknowledged that some individuals, like Willett, show blatant disregard for these precautions.
