HARTLEPOOL MAN IAN VINCENT SENTENCED FOR PERSISTENT CHILD ABUSE IN TEESSIDE

In December 2014, Ian Vincent, a man from Hartlepool, was sentenced to over nine years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl. The victim, who was only eight years old when Vincent first targeted her, endured a prolonged period of abuse that continued until she reached the age of 12.

The disturbing pattern of assault culminated in an incident where Vincent attempted to have sex with the girl. Fortunately, he was interrupted before he could carry out his intentions. During the court proceedings, the victim provided a heartfelt statement, revealing that at the time of the abuse, she believed her experiences were “normal,” a misconception that only became clear to her as she grew older.

She described how the trauma has affected her adult life, stating, “It was when I got older that it really started to affect me.” She also shared that she now struggles with trust issues around men, often avoiding situations where she might be alone with a male.

The victim further disclosed that she has been suffering from nightmares, waking up in tears, sweating, and feeling overwhelmed whenever she recalls the abuse. Her distress was compounded when she saw Vincent in public, which prompted her to contact the police.

Prosecutor Sue Jacobs explained that Vincent, who was 47 years old at the time and residing on Cameron Road in Hartlepool, initially denied the charges. It was only on the day of the trial that he changed his plea to guilty, admitting to the crimes of indecent assault and indecency with a child.

Vincent’s defense attorney, Yvonne Taylor, acknowledged that her client had experienced difficulties in his own childhood, including the tragic loss of his father to suicide and the death of his best friend. She argued that these hardships contributed to his behavior but did not justify his actions.

She described Vincent’s struggles with alcohol and drugs as his way of coping with personal trauma. Despite these explanations, the court was clear in its condemnation of his conduct.

The Recorder of Middlesbrough, Simon Bourne-Arton QC, condemned Vincent’s actions as a “gross breach of trust” and emphasized the severity of his repeated offenses against the vulnerable girl. He highlighted the gravity of Vincent’s breaches, noting that the abuse was carried out “repeatedly and consistently.”

Ultimately, Vincent was sentenced to nine years and three months in prison. Additionally, a Sexual Offences Prevention Order was issued to prevent any further harm and to monitor his conduct following his release from custody.
