COUNTY DURHAM SEX ATTACKER'S SILENCE ADDS TO VICTIM'S ANXIETY
Ian Matthew Suddes, residing on Millers Hill Lane in Consett, was given a sentence of 90 months in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely at Durham Crown Court.
The 52-year-old farmer admitted to assault by penetration in March 2019.
He did not provide an explanation for the severe injuries sustained by the woman after they went drinking and she lost consciousness.
The court was informed that she suffered serious harm, including internal damage, bruising, and abrasions, and she could not remember how she was injured.
Judge Ray Singh pointed out that Suddes assaulted her while she was heavily intoxicated and vulnerable, leading to significant distress and injuries that have impacted her life.
The victim required surgical intervention and may need additional procedures in the future.
The judge also noted Suddes's failure to account for her injuries, which contributed to her ongoing mental health struggles.
The defendant has prior convictions for drink-driving in 2001 and 2011.
The court characterized the assault as both sexual and violent, with the extent of her injuries making the severity clear.
