MORPETH PAEDOPHILE IAN HAVERY BRANDED A MONSTER AND SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS IN PRISON

In January 2020, a disturbing case emerged from Morpeth, Northumberland, involving Ian Havery, a man who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses against two young girls. The court heard how Havery subjected his victims to a series of appalling sexual assaults, leaving them with lifelong trauma. One of the victims recounted that Havery would physically hit her if she failed to comply with his sordid demands, illustrating the level of control and cruelty he exerted over them.

Further details revealed that Havery, aged 53, not only committed these acts but also engaged in disturbing online behavior. Investigations uncovered that he downloaded indecent images of children and engaged in conversations with other individuals who shared similar perverted interests. These online discussions included explicit talk about sexual activity with minors, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior extending beyond his physical crimes.

The criminal case came to light after one of the victims confided in a family member, revealing that Havery had been abusing her and referring to himself as a “nonce.” She described how he expressed a desire to be her boyfriend and had physically touched her. The second victim disclosed that Havery had been abusing her since she was as young as nine years old. She recounted that he had orally raped her, became angry if she did not obey his commands, and had physically assaulted her on several occasions. She expressed her fear of him and detailed the various forms of sexual abuse she endured.

When Havery was arrested, he did not deny the allegations. Instead, he fully admitted to all the accusations made by the victims. He pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, ten sexual assaults, and two counts of inciting sexual activity. Police investigations further revealed that Havery’s electronic devices—two hard drives and a mobile phone—contained over 300 indecent images of children aged between four and 16. Of these, 142 images were classified as the most serious category, although none depicted the victims he had abused.

Prosecutor Richard Bennett highlighted the extent of Havery’s disturbing online activity, noting evidence of paedophilic conversations with at least three other individuals and discussions involving sexual activity with children. The court was told that these online exchanges demonstrated a clear pattern of predatory behavior and a deep-seated paedophilic interest.

In sentencing, Judge Amanda Rippon described Havery as a “monster” and emphasized the profound and lasting impact of his crimes on the victims and their families. She labeled him a dangerous offender, citing his persistent abuse, his collection of child abuse images, and his online discussions. Havery was sentenced to 16 years in prison, with an extended license period of six additional years. Due to the severity of his crimes, he is required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence. Furthermore, he will be registered as a sex offender for life and is subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offenses.
