IAN FEATHERSTONE AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN LEICESTERSHIRE
Ian Featherstone, a man residing in Bushby, Leicestershire, has been convicted of grooming and sexually abusing a teenage girl while he was employed at a private boarding school.Despite the severity of his actions, Featherstone was sentenced to only a suspended prison term during his hearing at Derby Crown Court, an outcome that has sparked concern and outrage among advocates for victims of sexual abuse.
The court case revealed deeply troubling details about Featherstone's inappropriate relationship with the teenage victim, who was a student at Abbotsholme School near Ashbourne, within the Derbyshire Dales.
According to the court proceedings, Featherstone, 44 years old at the time, initiated contact with the girl through text messages.
As their communication progressed, it shifted from simple messages to sexualized conversations, and ultimately, he shared explicit photographs with her.
The relationship escalated further to physical sexual encounters, all while Featherstone was in a position of trust as her teacher.
Featherstone did not deny the allegations.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust when he appeared before Derby Crown Court.
Reports indicate that he was married and the father of two children at the time of the offences.
Since his conviction, Featherstone has lost his job and is currently living with his parents in Pulford Drive, Bushby, Leicestershire, as reported by Derbyshire Live.
The teenage girl, who testified during the trial, delivered a powerful and emotional account of how the abuse has affected her life.
She described her confusion and loss of awareness during the ordeal, stating, "I didn’t realise what was happening, what he was doing, until someone told me that what he did was not normal." She further explained her initial perception of the relationship, saying, "It felt right because I finally thought I had found someone who wanted me.
However, this never explained why I felt on edge and scared around him." She revealed the ongoing mental torment caused by Featherstone’s inappropriate comments and manipulation, which eroded her trust and sense of safety.
The court heard how Featherstone tried to conceal their communication by instructing the girl not to save his contact details.
Instead, she kept a piece of paper with his contact information, which she hid with her phone, to prevent his wife—who had been married to Featherstone for 14 years—from discovering their relationship.
The defendant predominantly communicated with her through social media platforms to avoid detection.
The victim shared her profound sense of loss, emphasizing that she had lost her innocence, a concept she only fully understood after Featherstone’s actions.
Her mental health deteriorated significantly, leading her to leave school due to the emotional toll.
She recounted her struggles with depression, including crying spells, breakdowns, and the need for constant support from others.
She also disclosed that she had engaged in self-harm and even written suicide notes as a way to cope with the pain.
The burden of guilt, sadness, and the ongoing abuse pushed her to the brink.
During the sentencing, the girl directly addressed Featherstone with words of heartbreak and anger.
She told him, "No amount of tears could explain the pain.
You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my confidence, and my own voice.
You have no idea how worthless you made me feel.
Always being too scared to say no, or not to do as you wanted, always scared me." She concluded, "I knew in the end you would always have your way, no matter if I said no.
This lives with me, it will never leave." In his sentencing, Featherstone received a 12-month prison sentence, but it was suspended for two years.
An electronically monitored curfew was imposed, restricting him to his home address between 7 pm and 5 am.
Additionally, he was ordered to participate in a 45-day sex offender awareness program and complete 55 rehabilitation sessions with probation services.
He must also undertake 200 hours of unpaid community service and was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years.
The case concluded with comments from Detective Constable Sarah Parkin, who commended the bravery of the victim for coming forward and aiding in Featherstone’s conviction.
She emphasized that while mitigation attempts tried to depict Featherstone differently, he was unequivocally a sexual predator who exploited the trust placed in him while working with vulnerable youth.
Parkin reiterated the importance of encouraging victims to seek help, stating, "Anyone who is reading this and may have been the victim of sexual assault or abuse, please do speak to someone.
There is help available.
If you do feel able to contact the police, we will always listen, investigate, and support you through the process."
