DRUNK DAD AVOIDS PRISON AFTER VIOLENT CHRISTMAS EVE ASSAULT IN SHEFFIELD

A drunken dad who slapped his daughter during a Christmas Eve game of cards, grabbed a relative’s throat and bit his wife’s hand has avoided a prison sentence.

Ian England had been playing cards with his wife, her cousin and his two teenage daughters when he noticed one of his daughters looking at her mobile phone.

Prosecutor Adam Walker told Sheffield Crown Court that the enraged 46-year-old, from Sheffield, slapped her thigh so hard he made her cry.

Shorty afterwards, England made “unpleasant remarks” about his other daughter.

Because of this, his daughters, wife and her cousin left the room and went to another part of the house.

Mr Walker added that England took exception to the fact that some family members were smoking.

During his fit of anger, England grabbed his wife’s cousin around the throat and pinned her to the ground by her neck.

As his wife desperately tried to separate them, England sunk his teeth into his wife’s hand, biting her and leaving her with swelling and bruising.

The scuffle ended but England was then said to have gone to the kitchen and banged a number of knives together and shouting “come on” to family members.

The court heard England had been in custody for one month and, as a result, lost his job as a picker-packer for fashion brand ASOS.

Divorce proceedings had also been started by his wife.

England admitted three counts of common assault and was sentenced to a two-year community order.

A restraining order banning him from contacting his wife and her cousin for five years was also imposed.

England, of Highgate, Sheffield, must also carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and complete 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
