IAN BENNETT SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS IN NORFOLK FOR HORRIFIC SEX OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG GIRL
In a case that has shocked the Norfolk community, Ian Bennett, a 52-year-old man with no fixed address, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 24 years after being convicted of multiple serious sex offences involving a young girl.The crimes, which spanned several years, came to light after a detailed investigation and a subsequent trial at Norwich Crown Court.
According to court proceedings, Bennett's abuse began when the victim was approximately nine years old.
The grooming process involved Bennett showing her pornographic images, which served to manipulate and control her.
The situation escalated when Bennett, at the age of 13, committed acts of rape against the young girl.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, displayed remarkable courage in later years by coming forward to report the abuse, which had left her emotionally and psychologically scarred.
Prosecutor Charles Myatt outlined the disturbing details of the case, emphasizing that the abuse was not a one-time event but a sustained campaign of sexual violence.
He revealed that during the police investigation, authorities discovered more than 8,000 indecent images on Bennett's computer.
These images included extreme pornography, highlighting the extent of Bennett's involvement with illegal material.
The impact statement provided by the victim described her feelings of being “broken” by the abuse inflicted by Bennett, who was working as a sandwich delivery driver at the time of the offences.
Judge Katharine Moore, presiding over the case, sentenced Bennett to 24 years in prison and ordered that he be placed on the sex offender register for life.
In her remarks, she condemned Bennett for his manipulative grooming tactics and for showing the young girl pornographic images, which she described as a significant factor in the trauma experienced by the victim.
The judge emphasized that Bennett’s actions had a profound and lasting effect on her and pointed out that he had shown no remorse for his crimes.
She also expressed concern about the ongoing risk Bennett posed to other young girls, underscoring the seriousness of his conduct.
Defense lawyer Dan Taylor argued that Bennett still did not accept the jury’s verdict and maintained that his client, who had previously been of good character, was a hardworking man.
Taylor explained that Bennett worked six days a week as a delivery driver for a sandwich company.
He also claimed that the indecent images of children found on Bennett’s computer were part of a broader collection of various pornographic material and insisted that Bennett did not derive sexual gratification from images involving children.
Despite these arguments, the court’s decision reflected the gravity of Bennett’s offences and the need to protect the community from further harm.
