HUSSAIN RIZWAN RATYAL AND ALI FROM BURTON-UPON-TRENT JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRLS

In April 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving a grooming gang from Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire, who subjected five vulnerable young girls to heinous sexual abuse. The victims, some as young as 13, were treated by the offenders as mere trophies, a phrase used by the presiding judge to describe the callous manner in which these young girls were exploited.

Taiyab Hussain, Shaheem Ratyal, and Sohail Ali, all aged 19 at the time, along with 18-year-old Mohammed Rizwan, were arrested after a young girl, who had watched an educational video about grooming, recognized the signs of abuse and realized she had been targeted. This revelation prompted her to come forward, leading to a police investigation that uncovered a disturbing pattern of exploitation.

All four men from Burton-upon-Trent pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offences, including engaging in sexual activity with minors, in February of that year. The court proceedings revealed that the offences took place between December 2016 and March 2017, involving girls aged 13 and 14. The victims' bravery in coming forward was instrumental in bringing the offenders to justice.

During sentencing at Stafford Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Gosling imposed significant restrictions on the offenders’ future conduct. All four men were subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that prohibits them from using the Snapchat messaging platform for the next eight years, a measure aimed at preventing further abuse.

The judge described the offenders’ behavior as particularly egregious, emphasizing that they had little regard for the young girls’ well-being. He stated, “It is clear from the evidence retrieved from various devices that there was communication between the defendants and it does establish their common interest in meeting and sexually abusing these girls. These were young men treating the young girls like trophies, and to some extent, one was spurring on another.”

Hussain, who resided on Shobnall Street, received a five-year prison sentence after sending highly sexualized messages and abusing a schoolgirl in his car, with another child present at the time. Rizwan, from Derby Road, and Ratyal, from Grange Street, were both sentenced to four years and four months in prison. Ali, of Weston Park Avenue, admitted to offences against a 13-year-old girl and was sentenced to four years in a young offenders’ institution.

Staffordshire Police confirmed that the charges stemmed from a series of offences committed over a three-month period, during which the victims were groomed and abused. The case highlighted the importance of awareness and vigilance, especially after one of the victims watched a film warning about grooming tactics and felt empowered to report her experiences to her family and authorities.

In a separate but related development in February 2018, four men from Burton-upon-Trent—Hussain, Rizwan, Ratyal, and Ali—pleaded guilty to child sex offences at Stafford Crown Court. Their crimes came to light after multiple victims, aged just 13 and 14, bravely came forward following their abuse. The investigation was initiated after one victim confided in her family, prompting police to act swiftly.

The offenders’ guilty pleas included multiple counts of sexual activity with a minor, causing a child to engage in sexual acts, and possession of indecent photographs. Hussain admitted to two counts of sexual activity with a child, causing a child to engage in sexual activity twice, and possessing indecent images. Rizwan pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual activity, causing a child to engage in sexual acts, and inciting a child to do so. Ratyal admitted to one count of sexual activity and five counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual acts. Ali pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

All four men are scheduled to be sentenced on April 16 at Stafford Crown Court, with the case underscoring the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat grooming and sexual exploitation of minors in the Staffordshire area.
