In a chilling case that spanned over ten years, Humaiun Khan, a man from Hull, was finally brought to justice for launching a terrifying sexual assault on a teenage girl in South Shields.The incident, which took place in November 2018, involved Khan posing as a young doctor to manipulate and deceive his young victim, leading to a distressing and traumatic experience that would leave lasting scars.
According to court proceedings, Khan, who was 45 years old at the time of sentencing, engaged in a series of telephone conversations with the girl, during which he falsely claimed to be a trusted medical professional.
He lavished her with praise and assured her that he would care for her, creating a false sense of trust and security.
His manipulative tactics aimed to lower her defenses, making her more vulnerable to his subsequent actions.
When the teenage girl, a resident of South Shields, eventually agreed to meet Khan in person, she quickly realized that he was not who he claimed to be.
The deception unraveled, and what followed was a terrifying ordeal in his car.
Khan subjected her to a sexual attack in the vehicle, an incident that left her feeling powerless and terrified.
During the attack, he also threatened her by claiming to possess intimate photographs of her, warning that he would expose her to her family if she revealed what had happened.
The court heard that Khan's threats and manipulation were designed to silence her and prevent her from speaking out.
Despite her fear, the girl showed remarkable bravery by testifying in court about the profound impact the assault had on her young life.
She described herself as a vulnerable child at the time and expressed how Khan preyed on her innocence and trust.
Her testimony revealed the emotional and psychological toll the incident took on her, including feelings of hurt and helplessness.
She also recounted how Khan even showed her fake identification to reinforce his false identity.
Prosecutor Paul Currer detailed the extent of Khan's deception, revealing that he was married with children and had made numerous phone calls to the girl while maintaining his false persona as a 21-year-old doctor.
The girl, naive and trusting, questioned none of his claims at the time.
The court was told that Khan instructed her to change out of her school uniform before they met at a Metro station, where he took her for coffee and food.
Their meeting culminated in the sexual assault in a deserted car park near the River Tyne, an area chosen for its seclusion.
During the attack, the girl felt overwhelmed and tried to escape, even attempting to run from the car and swim across the Tyne to South Shields in her desperation.
The trauma was so severe that she became physically sick afterward.
Khan, showing no remorse, continued to pursue contact with her afterward, giving her a mobile phone and expressing a desire to meet again.
He also threatened to distribute explicit photographs of her online and to tell her friends and family about her supposed misconduct.
Despite these threats, the girl refused to see Khan again.
It was only years later, after seeing a television program that reminded her of her ordeal, that she decided to report the incident to the police.
Her courage in coming forward helped bring Khan to justice.
Humaiun Khan, who now resides on Endymion Street in Hull, pleaded guilty to three charges of indecent assault.
His actions have been condemned by the court, which sentenced him to three years in prison.
Additionally, Khan is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure intended to protect the community and prevent further harm.
Judge Tim Gittins addressed Khan directly during sentencing, emphasizing the importance of accountability and the message that time does not erase the truth.
He stated, “A message needs to go out, not just to you but those contemplating or having committed such offences, that the passage of time creates no hiding place from true allegations.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the lasting impact of sexual violence and the importance of justice for victims.
