HUGHIE JANES AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN LLANELLI AND CARMARTHENSHIRE

A man named Hughie Janes from Llanelli has been convicted of heinous sexual crimes involving an 11-year-old boy, with details that have shocked the local community and the wider public. Janes, who previously resided at Clos Cefn y Maes in Llwynhendy, Llanelli, was found guilty of reprehensible acts that took place at an address in Carmarthenshire. The court heard disturbing evidence which painted a picture of a man who did not view his behavior as criminal, but rather, as something he believed was consensual and pleasurable.

During the proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, it was revealed that Janes harbored a deeply disturbing belief regarding children of primary school age. He argued that such children are aware of sexual matters and have a desire for such activities. The court was informed that Janes claimed he was providing pleasure to the boy he assaulted, believing there was no wrongdoing involved. This conviction was based on allegations that Janes had engaged in sexual acts with the young victim, including raping him at the residential address in Carmarthenshire. The prosecution, led by John Philpotts, detailed the abuse, which included Janes covering the boy's mouth while raping him and then performing oral sex.

When confronted by authorities, Janes initially produced a prepared statement denying all allegations. However, he eventually pleaded guilty to charges of raping a child under the age of 13 and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Despite his guilty plea, Janes’s past criminal record is extensive, with 11 previous convictions spanning 18 offences, such as dishonesty, drug-related crimes, and acts of violence.

In the court hearing, Janes's defense solicitor, Dyfed Thomas, expressed that his client was remorseful, citing mental health issues and problems linked to cannabis use as part of his client’s background. Nonetheless, these factors were not considered mitigating enough to avoid harsher sentencing. The judge, Recorder IWL Jones, emphasized the irreversible impact such actions have on victims and highlighted the disturbing findings from a detailed pre-sentence report. The report revealed Janes’s disturbing beliefs that children as young as 10 are aware of and want sexual activity, and that he did not perceive his actions as criminal.

According to the report, Janes considered what he did to the boy as a source of pleasure and failed to show remorse or empathy. The court was told that he poses a significant risk of committing further offenses, given his lack of understanding of the severity and harm of his actions. The Recorder explicitly stated that only an extended custodial sentence would adequately protect the public and prevent further harm.

Based on the facts and the disturbing insights into Janes’s mindset, the court sentenced him to a total term of 12 and a half years. This sentence included six and a half years in custody, with a subsequent extended six-year license period. Due to his guilty plea, Janes received a one-third reduction in his sentence, but he is required to serve at least two-thirds of his custodial period before he is eligible to apply for parole. The final decision about his release will be made by the Parole Board, and Janes will remain on the sex offender register for life, acknowledging the serious nature of his crimes and the threat he poses to society.
