HUGH MCGROGAN'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN EDINBURGH: VICTIMS DESCRIBE YEARS OF ABUSE AND VIOLENCE
In December 2014, Hugh McGrogan, a man with a long history of heinous crimes, was sentenced to 13 years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious offenses committed in Edinburgh. The court heard how McGrogan, who was formerly residing on Upper Kessock Street in Inverness, had inflicted a reign of terror over his victims spanning more than a decade, involving both sexual assault and physical violence.
During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, jurors were presented with disturbing testimonies from victims, including a young girl who recounted how McGrogan had drunkenly raped her when she was only in primary school.
She described him as a relentless bully and revealed that she was forced to perform sex acts on him as well.
The court was told that McGrogan’s offending was characterized by a systematic pattern of violence and sexual abuse, leaving deep scars on those affected.
Judge Lady Scott addressed McGrogan directly, emphasizing his lack of remorse and condemning his actions as devastating to the lives of his victims.
She highlighted that his criminal conduct involved not only sexual violence but also physical assaults, including punching, kicking, and slapping.
The court detailed how McGrogan had raped and assaulted two women and attempted to rape a third at a primary school, with additional abuse directed at a schoolgirl and a boy.
These offenses took place in the Craigmiller and Liberton areas of Edinburgh, with incidents dating back to between 1982 and 1995.
One of the women who testified described her experience of McGrogan staying at her home.
Initially, things seemed normal, but the situation quickly deteriorated as he began to physically assault her and sexually abuse her.
She recounted that McGrogan, often intoxicated, became violent, even attempting to strangle her at one point.
She described how he would speak to her as if she were worthless, and on one occasion, after returning from drinking, he threw her onto a bed and forced himself on her.
She vividly remembered that after the assault, McGrogan simply laughed in her face, a moment that left her feeling humiliated and frightened.
Despite suffering bruising, she chose not to seek medical help out of fear of him.
Another victim, a woman who was punched, kicked, and slapped by McGrogan, also testified about her ordeal.
She revealed that he did not need alcohol to become violent and that he had non-consensual sex with her.
She recounted a particularly harrowing incident where he demanded sex, grabbed her by the throat, and pinned her to a bed.
Her injuries included a broken mouth, and she described how she tried to resist and escape but was met with violence.
Throughout the proceedings, the prosecution, led by advocate depute Alan Mackay, accused McGrogan of deliberately targeting vulnerable individuals for his predatory and violent behaviors.
It was also noted that McGrogan had been in custody since May of that year, following his initial appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, where a request for bail was denied.
His defense counsel, advocate Matt Jackson, acknowledged the severity of the crimes, describing McGrogan as a father of three who had previously worked mainly in the catering industry.
However, the court was clear in its condemnation, and McGrogan was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register.
Judge Lady Scott deferred sentencing to allow for a comprehensive background report, including an assessment of any potential risk McGrogan might pose to the public.
Meanwhile, he remains remanded in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
The case underscores the profound impact of his decade-long campaign of abuse, which has left victims scarred physically and emotionally, and highlights the ongoing efforts of the justice system to hold such offenders accountable.
