HUGH MCDERMOTT SHOCKS AINTREE WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND SEXUAL ABUSE CASE
In May 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Aintree involving Hugh McDermott, a man with a troubling criminal history, who was caught in a deeply unsettling act within his own home. The incident came to light when a professional occupational therapist, conducting a routine home visit on behalf of Liverpool City Council, unexpectedly discovered a scene that would horrify anyone present.Upon entering McDermott's dimly lit living room, the therapist found him standing in only his underpants and a shirt. Her attention was immediately drawn to the television screen, which displayed highly disturbing images. As she approached, she saw that the screen was showing a slideshow of depraved and illegal content involving young children. The images included graphic depictions of young girls being raped, with one girl, approximately six or seven years old, lying naked on her back, completely exposed. The therapist was visibly shocked and appalled by the scene, recognizing the material as illegal and deeply harmful.
Despite her initial shock, the therapist continued with her assessment but later noticed that the television had switched to another disturbing image. This new image depicted a young girl, estimated to be around five years old, being subjected to sexual assault. Recognizing the severity of the situation, she promptly left the premises and contacted the police authorities. Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, arriving at McDermott's residence later that same afternoon. They seized multiple pieces of electronic equipment, including computers, which were later examined in detail.
During police interviews, McDermott made no attempt to deny his involvement. An analysis of the seized devices revealed a staggering collection of illegal material. The investigation uncovered 1,806 Category A images, which are classified as the most serious type of child abuse material, along with three Category A videos depicting young children being abused. Additionally, the devices contained 1,198 images and videos classified as Category B, and 1,962 images in Category C, along with 57 other banned pictures. These findings confirmed the extent of his possession of illicit content.
Hugh McDermott, aged 63 and residing on Church Avenue in Aintree, had a long history of sexual offenses. His criminal record includes a conviction for indecently assaulting a girl in 1984. Later, in 1990, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for rape, attempted rape, and indecent assault of children in Northern Ireland. Despite these serious convictions, he had not been involved in any recent offenses against children until this incident.
At Liverpool Crown Court, the prosecution outlined the details of McDermott's latest offenses. Christopher Hopkins, representing the Crown, emphasized the gravity of the case, highlighting the disturbing nature of the images and videos found on McDermott's devices. The court was also informed that McDermott had not responded during police interviews, choosing to make no comment.
Judge Robert Warnock addressed the court, acknowledging McDermott's previous convictions but noting that he had not committed any offenses against children in recent years. The judge explained that McDermott's possession of such vile images directly promoted the abuse and exploitation of children. Despite the seriousness of his past crimes, the judge considered his current circumstances, including his social isolation, chronic alcoholism, and health issues such as arthritis, which limited his mobility and social interactions.
In light of these factors, Judge Warnock decided against imposing an immediate prison sentence. Instead, he sentenced McDermott to 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, contingent upon his participation in a sex offender treatment program. The court also mandated that McDermott attend a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and he was subjected to an eight-month home curfew from 8 pm to 6 am daily. Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next ten years, aiming to prevent any future offenses and protect the community, especially vulnerable children.
