HUGH HYLAND INGLEBY BARWICK SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR INDECENT ASSAULTS

In a significant legal development, Hugh Hyland, a man with a troubling history of sexual offenses, has been sentenced to prison following a conviction for multiple counts of indecent assault. The case, which unfolded at Teesside Crown Court, brought to light the disturbing actions Hyland committed against a young girl, whose identity remains protected by law.

Hyland, aged 62 and formerly residing in Hartlepool, was found guilty by a jury of six men and six women after several hours of deliberation. The court heard that Hyland had engaged in inappropriate conduct towards the girl, including kissing her on the neck and touching her inappropriately on multiple occasions. The victim, who endured the abuse in silence for years, finally confided in loved ones and reported the incidents to the police, leading to the trial.

The court proceedings revealed the profound and lasting impact the abuse had on the victim. She struggled with trust issues towards men and suffered from depression as a consequence of her ordeal. During the trial, she was required to relive her traumatic experience by giving evidence in court, sitting just feet away from Hyland himself, who chose to defend his innocence. Hyland's defense claimed that the girl’s allegations were fabricated, suggesting she was seeking compensation.

It was also disclosed that Hyland had previously been convicted of similar offenses over a decade ago, which led to his relocation from Hartlepool. He had served an 18-month prison sentence for abusing three other young girls. Despite his past convictions, Hyland maintained his innocence in this latest case.

Judge Peter Armstrong sentenced Hyland to 30 months in prison. Additionally, he imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) to restrict Hyland from having unsupervised contact with children. Hyland is also required to register as a sex offender and is prohibited from working with children in any capacity. These measures aim to prevent any further harm and ensure public safety.

Hyland’s case underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals from sexual abuse, especially those who have a history of offending.
