HUBERT HALLMAN FROM ROMSEY AND ST ALBANS ADMITS TO CHILD ABUSE IN HISTORIC CASE
In a case that has resurfaced decades after the alleged incidents, Hubert Francis Hallman, a former teacher with ties to Romsey and currently residing in St Albans, has admitted to engaging in inappropriate and abusive behavior towards a young boy during his tenure at Stroud School in Romsey. The allegations, which date back to the 1960s, have come to light recently, leading to serious legal consequences for the 82-year-old pensioner.Hallman appeared before Southampton Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault committed against a minor under the age of 16. The court proceedings revealed that the abuse took place while he was employed at the school in Romsey, a town in Hampshire, during a period when the institution was under different ownership and management. His admission of guilt marks a significant development in a case that has remained dormant for many years.
Following his plea, magistrates granted Hallman unconditional bail, allowing him to remain free until his sentencing hearing scheduled at Southampton Crown Court on January 11. During this hearing, the court will determine the appropriate sentence for his crimes. Additionally, Hallman has been ordered to register with the police under the provisions of the Sexual Offences Act. The duration of this registration requirement will be decided at his upcoming court appearance.
In response to the allegations, Joel Worrall, the current headmaster of Stroud School, expressed his dismay and concern. He stated, “We are all appalled by the news that a former teacher of the school from the 1960s has been charged with indecent assault, and our thoughts are with the victim.” Worrall emphasized that although the offenses occurred over 50 years ago, the school finds it deeply upsetting to have its name associated with such historic allegations. He also acknowledged the courage of those who came forward to report the abuse, saying, “We extend our sympathies to those affected by this and admire their bravery in reporting these issues to the authorities.”
Worrall further underscored the importance of safeguarding and the unacceptability of any form of abuse, especially by individuals entrusted with the care and education of children. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and justice in addressing historical abuse allegations, regardless of how much time has passed.
