HUBERT GRELIAK SENTENCED IN LONDON FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT WHILE FILMING CRIME
A man who committed rape and sexual assault against a woman while recording his crimes on his phone has been sentenced to prison. Hubert Greliak was apprehended after his victim reported an incident of sexual assault and theft in Ealing, West London, in January 2020. Police officers arrested the 33-year-old and confiscated his phone, but he refused to provide his PIN code.An analysis of a hard drive seized from him revealed evidence of the rape. Greliak was subsequently charged. Although he was granted bail, he violated its conditions, prompting the Metropolitan Police to locate him and fit him with an electronic tracking device.
In January, at Isleworth Crown Court, Greliak was convicted of rape and assault by penetration. He admitted to theft and failing to cooperate by refusing to unlock his phone. He received an 18-year prison sentence, with a requirement to serve 13 and a half years behind bars, followed by a period on licence.
Detective Inspector Julian Crabb of the Metropolitan Police’s West Area Command Unit Safeguarding Team stated, "We are absolutely committed to tackling all forms of violence against women and girls and are dedicated to achieving criminal justice outcomes for victim-survivors as we have in this case." He praised the victim's bravery, saying, "The victim bravely went through the ordeal of a trial and thanks to both her compelling evidence and the work of the investigation team, we were able to put this man behind bars for a long time."
DI Crabb described Greliak as a dangerous and manipulative individual who showed no remorse for his actions. "He has showed no remorse or guilt for his disturbing and destructive actions. I sincerely hope the victim can begin to achieve closure and focus on the future," he said.
The detective also acknowledged that investigations into sexual offences are often complex. He expressed satisfaction that the actions of the investigating officers were commended by HH Judge Hammerton, adding, "I hope this gives survivors of sexual violence the confidence to come forward and report to police."
